Another possibility it to keep the heel shifter, but replace the big pad with a small nub. Something just big enough to catch with your heel, leaving the rest of the footboard open, letting you move your foot around.
First thing I took off my bagger was the heal shifter. I slide my feet up and down all over the boards for different positions/leaning, and that damn heal shifter just gets in the way. Got no use for it.
Right there with you man. Coming from a dyna to a RG I tried using the heel shifter for almost 2 years and couldn't get used to it. I ditched it last month and never looked back.
For those who took their heal shifter off you can cut a spacer from the rubber shifter lever they took off. Saves a bunch of money.
I like the heel shifter every now and then....but I think I may try to shorten my OEM peg so I can have the best of both worlds. Though meanwhile, Harley makes a folding lever that's also best of both worlds (except the 80 bucks, of course)

Now that looks interesting. Actually, 80.00 is in line with some of the other better quality shifter levers.
My first attempt was to pull the heal shifter off and cap the end of the shifter rod. I didn’t care for that much so I bought the .84 spacer and it’s much better. I think I’ll be sticking with just a toe shifter.
I wear a size 12 boot and got spoiled on my VTX1300R with the heel shifter so I ordered an Arlen Ness one form J&P for 200.00 and am a happy camper again. Also, it’s really wide so I don’t accidentally hit it with either my heel or toe 👍

G'day mate. I did just that abt 15 yrs ago. I hate the heal shifter.
To me, it blocks my left foot from moving around.
I shift a LOT so my toe hurts. (I ride daily.) So, I move my toe a little further forward and it is GOOD now.
Also my friend, sometimes I really do not even get the foot/toe that is, under the sifter. My boot / toe area accidentally hit the SIDE of the shifter and it shifted perfectly. Now that happens more and more. muscle memory I guess.
I do not think there is any right or wrong. It is a matter of which works for each of us.

That spacer is what comes on the new bikes and it moves the toe shifter out a bit, that made a big difference to me.
After doing some riding I am really enjoying the freedom of movement on my left foot board.
