Just an update. Got a new sensor installed and it was doing the same thing due to my own error of not clearing out the codes. Once cleared fired right up. Got her up to operating temps and fired each time. Cruised around close to home for about an hour while still verifying that she starting. Started up this morning after sitting all night. Thanks for all the input everyone!
On the other hand, if you don't mind that the motor does not shut off if you lay the bike over/replacement sensor does not have the angle tilt kill switch on it, you can replace the sensor with a MC-SPA3 for $51 instead.
I replaced the cam position sensor on my 98 WG last week with the MC-SPA3. Great unit and easy to install. The only issue is the wires on the new unit are a foot too short. It was unfortunate that I had to cut and splice to the lead from the stock unit instead of plugging directly into the Duetsch connector. Nevertheless, it fired right up and runs like new.
