Default Cold Weather Gear

Hey y’all. Looking for some cold weather suggestions.

I commute about 45 min to work, mostly highway. It’s getting down into the 40’s and I’d like to prep to ride in the 30’s. Right now with my jacket and leg thermals plus winter gloves it’s tolerable, comfy even. But once it dips into the 30’s I wanna be prepared.

I’m not crazy about the idea of chaps, but if that is truly the beat option then so be it.

Right now I’ve been thinking about some Carhart insulated bibs or flannel/fleece lined heavy duty jeans.

Any input?

By far the best option is heated gear but it gets pricey quick, layers can only do so much. If you are anti-heated gear check out the Freeze Out gear line on Revzilla or Cycle Gear. I wore that for years and it works very good but not as good as a heated jacket liner, sock, gloves, and pants.

Carhart would keep you comfy. I got some fleece-lined hiking pants that work well over the jean. Was mid 30's in Colorado and kept me warm.
Got some Joe Rocket Wind Chill Men's Snowmobile Gloves that works well.
A member suggested Hand Guard Wind Deflector which I bought but haven't used yet.
There's also the hot pouches you stick if your boots and glove.

Layers are the big thing don't have to over do it for 30's. Chaps work well for many easy to remove. Seems some how in more recent years it is not PC or something for many. Ride in weather most won't even go out in often. I know this fail to gear up right once you will not make that mistake again.
When riding in cold remember to move hands and feet from time to time. If not you may need to and find them slow or unable to move. heated gear works really well . takes some getting use to using.

I use flannel jeans, heated jacket, and chaps when its really cold. never needed anything more, and I hate cold. I could care less about what people think of me in chaps, they work when its really cold out. That's what matters. By far, the heated jacket makes the ride much more enjoyable.

FWIW- If it's the bike in your sig, I'd strongly suggest a pair of snowmobile bibs, heated glove liners and a heated jacket liner or vest.

Carhartt fleece lined jeans over Cycle Gerr Freezeout pants liner, then heated jacket liner. Heated Gloves if you choose. This is all you need.

Layering only works if temps and wind are in the "mild cold" range. When it's really cold, you need electrics to be comfortable.

I haven't gone heated gear yet and I do quite a few, longish days in sub 40° temperatures. The one thing I do that works really well is wearing winter bicycling pants under my heavy, Kevlar lined, riding jeans; they provide warmth and some wind protection; on really cold and long days I add traditional long underwear. Up top, from inside out, I wear an undershirt, a wind-stop shirt (finely woven shiny material), a heavy fleece pullover, (sometimes) a light wind breaker, a very thin ultra-light down packable jacket all below my leather. My hands are the problem. I have winter H-D riding gloves that I wear with a liner, I still need to reach down and grab the head of the engine (for about 30 seconds at a time) to warm those up sometimes. I will probably bite the bullet and get some heated gloves and/or heated grips this year.

Except for my hands, the problem is not the cold, it is the hassle of the layers: it takes a long time to get ready and I feel like a snowman when I stop for food... A heated jacket liner under my leather could replace several layers.

I use Harley's fabric FXRG Jacket with the liner, Tourmaster pants with the liners, FXRG boots, and insulated gloves ... this keeps me comfortable into the low 30's ... if I had to replace my gear, it would be with all Tourmaster gear
