You are responsible for making sure the Dzus fasteners are secure. And yes the pinscan spread if you're not careful. I suggest keeping a spre pair in the saddlebag just in case.
I can't quite envision a Dzus pin that has "spread." Could you or someone else explain this to me? It seems to me they are either fastened or not fastened, on or off, and there isn't any middle ground.
My pins spread, made of pretty soft steel. I just straightened back out with pliers. I use allen bolts on front with j-nut and the Dzus fasteners on back, it helps to keep for security and to keep from "falling off".

I have a friend with the same bike and on day four of a six day ride he lost one of the mounting bolts securing the right bag. This was an easy fix but could have been a major safety issue if he had not caught it early. Good luck

Saddlebag fell off my '07streetglide one block fromthe house after a 150 mile ride. The bag was scraped up along the bottom and top edges. Lucky I was going slow. The bag had raingear and not much else in it. I went to the dealer to see what could be done about it. The service manager told methe pins that hold the bags onto the spring wire had spread, which why the bag vibrated off. He than told me that since it's 9 months old with 3000 miles Harley would not warranty the repair. If it happened out the door in the begining no problem. He did replace the pins and readjust the brackets no charge. I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem?
My left bag fell of at a light flipped over on the top and scratched the heck out of it, Dealer wouldn't stand behind it either... said I didn't secure it properly..
the bike had 300 miles... I had to bend the tabs on the locks back to re-attach the bag, SM looked and said "See there not bent at all" needless to say they
don't get any of my money... and if I get another bike, I'll go elsewhere...

If the pin is not inserted all the way and you think it is and you start to turn it, the ends will start to flare out (spread). Its kinda like a key in the ignition; if it isn't fully pushed in and you try to twist it anyway, something will give- more than likely the key will break. In the case of the Dzus pin, if you pushit in butit doesn't go in all the way, or the spring doesn't go all the way into the notch of the pin, and you try to turn it-it will start to spread.
Okay, I follow you. I always look at the pin as it attaches to make sure it's going in properly.
