Fork fangs definitely increased heat I felt off engine while riding at lower speeds and higher ambient temps, and according to the oil temp gauge I have installed there was--to the best of my recollection--maybe a 5-10 degree increase to oil temps as well. It's been probably 7 years since I installed fangs and they made such a huge difference at highway speeds I don't mind some slight discomfort at low (maybe <30 mph @95+ degrees ambient temp) speeds, but I don't ride above upper 90s/100 degree temps at most.
However, while speed mitigated rider discomfort from reduced airflow, it did nothing for oil temp--the increase to oil temps seemed like it was there even at highway speeds and if I were riding in 100+ temps would be concerning, though I'd likely keep them installed through cooler season and remove only when warmer weather required it. The aesthetics are also pretty unfortunate, but again they make rides so much more enjoyable I just try not to think about that.
Few years ago I did 2" tank lift, mostly for looks, but also hoping it might take some excess heat away; I didn't notice much difference either felt or oil temp, however.
Oh, and these are experiences on my Road King, so I suppose batwing might act somewhat differently...
Great input! Thank you. I'm sure others will appreciate it as well. But yeah, the wife and I do a lot of traveling in the Southwest with temps as high as 120*. A 10* oil temp increase at the temps you were riding in might be worse at higher temps.
Just updating my original post.. I decided to try the Fangs. While they do work and made my rides so much more enjoyable, I am not happy with the look. I also had to "adjust" them to make them fit with my engine guard. The fangs hit both sides when turning all the way. I had to bend them to allow full steering, which I know we don't use much, but I can't lock my forks now!
Most importantly, my buffeting issue is almost completely eliminated!
Thanks for all the input!
Actually I did wind up installing them backwards, because frontwards they blocked my turn signals! Aesthetically, it's a no win situation, but functionality it's a win!
