2004 Road King Cruise Stopped Working-HELP
If the green light turns red right away, I would unplug the idle cable sensor or check your brake light switch.
There's the module (black box) that has the circuit board, stepper motor, and ribbon.
Then attached to it is the ribbon to cable adapter and cable running to the throttle.
I would look to see if the cable is still connected to your throttle body. There's a plastic clip that attaches the cable to the throttle could have weakened after 17 years and broke.
If that looks good, I would inspect the ribbon adapter. I think there were some reports on the ribbon breaking.
If all that looks good, i would say the stepper motor is bad or the module itself is bad and would have to replace.
If you change modules or mess with the ribbon, I would make sure to do the cruise control ribbon cable adjustment procedure.
I took the procedure from the link above that matches my service manual.
The engine should be at normal operating temperature and throttle and idle cables should be correctly adjusted. To set the correct cable lash proceed as follows:
1. Push the Cruise Switch on the right handlebar to RESUME and hold it.
2. Turn the Cruise ON/OFF switch to ON.
3. Turn the Ignition switch to IGNITION.
4. Start the engine. The green Cruise Enabled/Engaged lamp in the speedometer will illuminate.
Wait 3 Seconds for the lamp to go off.
5. Release the Cruise Switch from the RESUME position
6. Push the Cruise switch to RESUME and hold. Cruise will pull in cable until change in RPM is detected. The number of motor steps required to rev the engine is stored in memory.
7. After engine revs and Cruise Enabled/Engaged lamp is extginguished release the Cruise Switch from the RESUME position.
8 Turn the ignition switch to off.
Here's link of Hot installing a kit but should help you see where the cables run on the throttle. There could be a chance a retaining clip fell off as well.
