I am gearing a click followed by nothing else. I have installed a direct drive button to the starter but all it does is makes me lose all connection. I have chased power everywhere. I have jumped direct from the battery. And yet nothing will engage the starter! Help please.
First make sure your getting 12v to the single wire at the starter , remove the connector and test voltage by pressing the start / run button ( ign on ) on the handle bar , it should only show voltage when pressed . If all is good , sounds like a bad solenoid , you can pull the solenoid and check the two surfaces for wear , weak batter / poor connection can cause it to pit / arc , causing a loss in function to the starter clutch .
You may need a replacement kit , but you could try cleaning both surfaces with some emery cloth and see if that helps .
Now , if the " click " is the solenoid fully engaging , then there's a chance the starter clutch is shot and needs replacing .
Pull the battery, charge it fully then have it load tested. When you get home follow the ends of those 2 cables, remove inspect and clean them. Reassemble and ride.
so you're magic button mounts to the selonoid, engages the selonoid and starter?
If it turns out to be the starter itself, I was my own guinea pig and bought a new Ebay starter for $126 delivered about 7 years ago. I suspect it came from the same manufacturer as everyone else's. Redardless, it works just fine in my '00 95" Road King. (With the direct solenoid bottom installed and still not working, I suspect you'll want to replace it anyway (particularly if it's the original 20 y.o. part.)
One of my bookmarked videos , really does give you an idea of what's going on inside the starter . once you get into it , it's not that difficult . The starter clutch is pretty easy to replace as well , couldn't find the video I've seen on the forum , maybe someone here might post it .
