Default 2004 Road King

I purchased my current 2004 Road King a couple of months back. The bike came with all the original paperwork, service history and all the accessories that it came with when new. Also came with two windshields. The original owner paid just over $30k after financing.

The headlights were upgraded and it had 12 inch apes but with the bends for a fairing. Since I bought it I changed the bars, still 12 inch apes but no bends. I also put a single seat on. Here are some pics.

Not sure why they'd put those bars on there, but that's a name nice ride. You did good. Looks much better now. My RK has 12's and for me they feel perfect

Good year of Bike. Those bars are, well, hideous...but that's just my opinion. (sorry!_)

I agree, that’s why I changed them. Bike has just regular 12 inch apes now.

Twin cam switch from spring loaded cam chain tensions to hydro loaded tension shoes in 2007.

At around the 30K mark, really need to start checking the wear of the cam chain tension shoes (both in and out), and not a bad idea to change the plate out to the hydro style tensioners isntead. The hydro tension system has slower wear to the plastic shoes, but even with them, need to start checking/replacing then at around the 50K mark before they start to disintegrate and send plastic shards into the motor.

As for food for thought, not hard to pull rocker assemblies to use the stock fixed length push rods (and replace the rocker covers with a better gasket before they start to leak), but at the same time, may want to go with adjustable push rods that allows you to pull the cam and cam plate to replace tension shoes as needed, and not have to pull the rocker assemblies in the process. P.S

P.S, Good looking bike, but if your going to run the windshield, install some HD Wind deflector fanges to the forks.
They helps to reduce helmet buffering at speeds, works like a steering dampening at speeds to calm down the steering, and adding extra chrome to a RK is never a bad idea in the first place. On my RK with windshield, was getting whip lash above 60 from helmet buffering, and steering was very bad above 70 as well.
Now at over 80mph with fangs installed, still no helmet buffering with wind coming up from under the windsheild, and not a problem taking my hands off the bars since the front end is that calm as well.

The bike came with a tall windshield and a short one. I tried both and I prefer no windshield. I had a fat boy prior to the RK and it did not have a windshield. I guess it’s what I’m used to. The RK is way more comfortable. Long trips would be no problem on this bike. I did have the cam tensioners checked. I was told they were still in good shape.
