Default Engine light without code?

Is it common to get an engine light without a code?
ive gone through a neutral switch and a rear brake switch within the past few months.
replaced both & cleared a previous b1155 and p0117 code.
engine light is on again with no codes shown.
battery has been out of the bike/disconnected for a few days.
charge is good, battery is good, connectors, wires, & all connections are good.

is this because there is still a stored/historical code vs an active code?

what’s the next step if there are no codes showing again after a few hundred miles?

if there are no codes, then there are no historical codes either.

right after i first bought my bike, it had a cel light on. when i tried to retrieve the codes via the gts radio, it showed no codes. but if i went through the process of using the odometer, i had one code. cleared it, and it has never returned. i don't remember even what the code was anymore, but it was not a major fault.

When there is an active code, the engine light is on steady...

When there is a historical code, after the engine light turns off at start up, a few seconds later it will come on again, for a brief time, then go off... That's how it worked on my pre-canbus bike (2012)... been awhile since I've had a code on my canbus bike (2016) and don't remember if it was the same...

Once a code switches to an inactive code, it will stay as a historical code in the ECM for several engine cycles, then clear itself...

I have read of engine problems that don't throw a code, but I believe if the engine light is tripped, there should be a code...

Exactly what I thought... I'll just ride it and pay attention for any trouble signs or new codes.

FWIW...

I had an intermittent code on my 2003 EFI.... I was wondering why it was showing a historical code light flash because I never saw an engine light. I then noticed that at freeway speeds (75mph+) once in awhile, the engine light would come on for a few seconds, then go off...

I forget the exact code number and wording, but the historical code was something like incomplete combustion or spark or something on the front cylinder.. Plugs checked OK, coil checked OK, so I changed plug wires and never saw that code or engine light again...
