Not new to motorcycles, but new to the HD family. Just purchased a new 07 Ultra last week. Had V&H slip ons, SE air cleaner, and the 103 download(?). I know this bike is going to be hotter than what I'm used to and I know this has been beat to death about the heat from the rear cylinder, but my question is: When I take it in for the 1000 mile service , would it be good money spent to have the SERT installed. Will that bring the temps. back down to a more normal level and is the extra HP an tourqe noticeable. Thanks for input in advance and I really am enjoying my new bike and look forward to many years of service from it.
I have a buddy running the 103 download with the stock 96" and it seems to be a good setup. If things are running good it would be a waste of money to go with the sert with the setup you have IMHO.
was it dynotuned after download? ..how's it running ?, strong ?..any decel pops ?.. mileage? if the bike feels like it's running acceptable to you don't waste your money.
Later
I would check the specs of the 103" to see if it uses the same cam profile. The knock retard sensors can help but they may be working overtime to prevent knocking, and should that system fail I would be concerned that my engine would suffer.
Just MHO but just because it works dont make it good, I would want to compare all the tuning paramaters for both setups, and for certain the VE's will be out which will effect other areas.
If it works, then good luck to you, and I wish you well. Its just that I wouldnt do it.
I'm not having any issues with the performance of the bike, I'm more intrested in controlling the heat issue from the lean EPA settings. I went to the shop last night to discuss this with the wrench and he said they have had very good results by going to a true dual setup with a Fuel pak. I have seen similar setups posted on here and wonder if this is worht the $1000 they qouted to do this upgrade. Will I see a noticeable diffrence in the heat put off the motor?
I have a STOCK ultra (for about a week now), ride it everyday. The temp has been around 100, over that in traffic. Along with the heat shieds, there's been no problem with the heat. It is an AIR COOLED machine, so the heat is dissipated through the oil and the AIR. Every want to richen the mixture, but how about improving cooling with an oil cooler or a fan if it bothers you? Why let your fuel mileage suffer? Performance? IT'S ALMOST 900 POUNDS! If you want performance from a cruiser, get a VROD or Valkyrie. I think different people have a different threshold for what should be "normal". I'm sure my bike is no different than the others. Don't make it a science project, just ride it and enjoy. Have you put enough miles on it to realize that it is unbearably uncomfortable or just listened to eveyone complain? Do you ride in shorts or in real gear-that makes a big difference. Don't make problems where there aren't any. Anyway, the SERT is just another way to change spark/fuel curves. It's a powerful program but an unnecessary one for a few mods. Sure, many riders go out and throw down for one, but usually the potential will never be tapped and certainly squandered without dyno or track testing. It's best for the strip where peak performance is required with ever changing conditions (and continuing changes to a bike). The only issues I have experienced with my ultra is the hot air and whine on the forums, not on my bike. There's no reason to spend money on imagimary issues, but I'm sure the dealer will gladly accept your donation.
I have the stage one with SERT on my 06 RK. Bike runs great, but I wouldn't
run out and buy one if you don't need it. Knowing what I know now,I'd say the SERT
is over kill for a stock bike with just a stage one set up,and would better serve someone
with more serious motor mods.

I think what some Dealers are doing goes back to what was popular for many of the '05 bikes. May have occured sooner, but I became involved in this process with my previous '05 RK. Installed slip-onsand Ness air cleaner assembly, and Dealer highly recommended downloading their Stage 1 Big Bore (95") download vs. the standard (88") Stage 1 download. They claimed it was recommended by the MoCo also, since the factory downloads were still on the lean side. It worked very well at that time on my RK, and I know several '05 owners with similar setups (pipes and optional a/c) where the bikes responded very well.
I think in ga.mason's case, his Dealer has downloaded the factoryEPA approvedStage 1 Big Bore (103") for a '96" Stage 1 upgrade in hopes that it would operate a little richer than the factory Stage 1 download.
Hopefully Shovelhead Bob or Doc can chime in with some expert advise.
