That's a very good candidate for the root cause.
I had an issue on my '06 where one of the three wires was not fully seated on the tabs shown above. It had good enough contact to power up the gauges and APPEAR to be good, but not enough of a connection to supply the current required to start the bike.
My '02 just started to act up. Key to run position, sometimes everything is fine and others the pump does not cycle and some of the lights do not light up. If you move the **** just a little everything goes to normal. I think it is the same issue and probably a little corrosion problem. Time to get the manual out and see how to take the dash/center ignition mod out & apart.
