So don't disconnect the battery cable, use the ignition switch. Got it.

The radio takes about 30 seconds to shut down after the ignition is turned off on the '14 up bikes. Pretty sure turning the engine off first VS turning the whole shebang off with the ignition switch is a moot point. I regret getting pulled into this post and will exit with my tail firmly between my legs now, knowing I'm destroying my Harley every time I turn it off. Oh wait, mine doesn't even have an ignition switch, I guess I'm going to be OK.

A graceful shutdown is when a computer is turned off by software function and the operating system (OS) is allowed to perform its tasks of safely shutting down processes and closing connections. A hard shutdown is when the computer is forcibly shut down by interruption of power.
While true for a PC, it is not true of applicable to automotive ECUs. Those are powered up, or powered down, by power interruption via the ignition switch. They are designed for this.

Vehicles do not have a way to request it to power down like a computer has.
The second, or is it 3rd laugh to me, is when turning ignioton off you are killing everything. Doesn't sound graceful.

On CAN bus systems, turning the ignition switch off isn't a hard shut off anyway. There are two tiny wires to the ignition switch now and it runs on +/- 5V like all the other controls. It's absolutely a shut down request. That's why '14 and up bikes can get the CVO flash for ignition switch delete. The radio still receives power, as does the security system.

I always use the kill switch when I shut it down.
The only reason I do it is because I like to kill ****.
It's not the same, but I don't have to be concerned with getting locked up for it.

I don't know now. But in the past I thought you wrote over a map with a new map, so no going back.

If this was the case guys would be losing maps all the time. As evident here people are doing both.
