Well MotoJockey I was with you until you said "and they employ people who are a lot smart than I am..."! At that point I laughed out loud. That is the whole problem, I dont think they do. They have all these new engineers and designers fresh out of school and they're told "Make it better, so we can sell more!" Do they ask us old riders what we want? I don't want a "smart bike" or a smart car for that matter. Soon having a motorcycle that requires shifting will be a thing of the past. And if you own one that still does nobody will steal it, because they can't. "Let's look at what the wave of the future trends are!" is what they say in their little meetings with their man buns. "Ooh let's make it easier to ride by not having to use a key!" What a great idea. Same with this thread. Everyone is butthurt, and they're doing it their way damnit. That's how they were raised. I can only imagine if we slipped back in time and there was suddenly a kick starter on the motorcycles. That thread would hit thousands! "What's the proper way to" do anything or "why is this here" threads will always run long here.

The generation that likes Harleys that look like they are from the 80s and 90s with no technology is a dying breed, I dont say that to be harsh but it is a fact. Harley Davidson understands that Im sure, they know that generation can no longer sustain the MOCO, they have to evolve to cater to a newer generation, one that has zero desire to purchase a $30k bike that looks just like it did in 1995 (probably when they were born) and has no tech or gadgets that people these days look for. Its a business and HD knows they will have to play the game if they plain to survive into the future.
The post wasn't a poll to see who uses kill switch or ignition. Just saying...
You will learn here that threads will start out on the tracks but as posts build up it will get derailed, back on the tracks again and if you see a thread with 8 pages you can best believe its been derailed, back on tracks until it hit a 18 wheeler that was stuck on the tracks and oh yeah, the train was carrying hazardous material and the tanks were breached! That is not exact science but it usually sums up a multiple page thread around here but hey, its all good fun and can be entertaining at times!

I'm sure there are some really smart and talented engineers at the MoCo, and I suspect more than a few of them get as frustrated as many of us... Both on the design of things, but also on the quality of many components incorporated in the bikes...
After all, in a publicly traded company, the Board makes all the final decisions, and the beancounters have more sway than the engineers. As long as something isn't "dangerous" or "unsafe" (read liability), the component quality and best engineering strategies will always take a back seat to the bottom line.... $$$$$$$$$

Ahhh... the good old days; petcock's, priming, choke's, carb's and needles.... YAS! I can still remember two keys for your car, door and ignition... crazy!
