When I developed a transmission leak from that area on my 03, it was because the mainshaft bearing had walked in and taken out the seal. To remove the race I scored it lengthwise with a dremal.. Didn't have to go all the way through or the full length. Light pop with a chisel cracked the race and it slid right off. Had to use a dental pick to get all the seal out.
Replaced the bearing race with the S&S race. It has a shoulder in the outboard end that prevents it from walking in too far. Used a couple short pieces of 1" pipe, a washer and the old clutch nut plus a little preheat of the race to install new race. Replaced all other seals while at it. That was at least 60k miles ago. I Replaced the belt and drive pulleys about a year and a half ago only because they had 115k miles on them. Have a custom made deep socket for that pia front pulley nut. All seals and bearing races were fine. Still fine

My bike is a 2003 with 85k miles. Never driven hard. Evidently, all bikes that have that RACE walk almost immediately after install....at least that happened on mine.
ALL I want is to stop the leaks and ride.
They were making noise. I think the failure issue has been with the six speeds. But if I had my primary off I would change it. On my 01, I changed at 34, and again at 87. To me for the time it takes take primary off, might as well.

The race did walk on my 01, into tranny. Was annoying to get off.

IMO if I had 20-30k on bearing, and primary off, I would spent the small amount money to replace. My goals are not to do it again. Labor is more of value to me than parts.

AS broken belt will leave you on side of the raod for hours, late for work, talking to cops, ect. I personnally think it is foolish to run them this long. I had one pacman at 55, other Iooks great, but I replace at 87. Now that I have done it, I hope I don't wait that long again.

I agree that's a lot of miles on a belt. I know people who have been through a couple in that many miles. Maybe lucky but I always inspect and make sure property adjusted with every tire change and before any long ride.. Belt still looked good. Still looked serviceable, a little wear. Rear pulley a little worn. Mainly changed because of age.. And thought best to change belt and pulleys as a set. Bike has been making almost 130hp for a long time. Also don't see too many gravel roads

A tire change is 10k ,miles. I don't want to wait hours for a tor truck if I am 20m miles away, be late for work, ect. I realize something can fail unplanned, and leave you dead in the water too.

Cell phone mechanics don't realize, there are places without services, and you are not going to get a tow truck in 10 minutes.

Changing the sprockets with the belt, is an expensive job I realize. I just did both my bikes, the last two winters. Plus when I had it apart rebulding tranny and replacing seals. it got expensive.
