Had the same issue after a trip trough a ditch. Spring over stretched. Dealer laughed saying you never get it on, there must be a tool, he was a ------ head. all i did was connect spring to 2 spots then twist stand so it is on lip of the hole you then have a nice long lever just pops in.
Ordered a new black spring, tried the methods described still couldn't get it on there but it didn't bend like the chrome one. Looked at the bottom of the tab, ALOT of road rash so must have been bent up. Bent it about a 1/8th inch and spring slipped in after some elbow grease was applied in conjunction with the turn of the kickstand towards the front of the bike trick. Bent tab seems to be the issue. Thanks all!
Proper tool for this job is a spring hook which is used to install exhaust springs on cars without bending them(and jiffy springs on Harleys on the side of the road).
