fwiw, I just installed XM on my SGS two days ago and tested it in my garage w/ big garage door open (on the east side not south where their satalite is supposed to be). The oem flat antenna received one bar and the station made a few attemps to play but just could not grasp the signal. It did grab the initial installation update from the satalite so I know it worked. Then I installed the phallic Pixel next to my dash vent behind the shield at the recomendation a few posts above. It got 2 bars out of three and played music! but with a few breif interruptions. Pretty impressed since I was in a garage of a stucco house with a ton of crap stored in the rafters. Also may make a good gas cap holder
I removed it from inside the fairing and ran it up through the vent, adding a small notch so as not to pinch the wire and mounted it behind the windshield. The reception is great now! Holding three bars in locations where I used to drop. Thanks guys!
I swapped my antenna to a Pixel will find out soon enough. I am not giving it much faith to be honest. I am going on a trip next week so we shall see. I did mount it on the exterior.

I looked all over and I cant find where it says this will impact the signal.
Satellite signals are directional, the antenna much face the satellites. Thats why heavy tree cover blocks the signal. The instructions that come with the radio, clearly indicate how and where to mount the antenna. And that is face up
