I am looking for a quick release tour pack mount for my 2016 Streetglide. I am making a bike rack to hang my race bikes off the back of the streetglide so not concerned about the finish since I will be welding then powder coating. I am concerned about the strength of the rack. How do the aftermarket ones compare to the oem? Is there an aftermarket mount that stands out as better then the others? The oem model seems $$$ since I plan to be welding on it.
You're talking about one of these right?
If so, yeah I'd get an after market one for half the price if I was going to be cutting/welding and re-finishing it. The metal seems pretty close to the same as the HD ones. But in general, I do not care for the aftermarket ones, every time I have helped somebody make their tour pack detachable, they wind up needing some tweaking to get them to fit right... but very do-able. I also don't like their latches and bushings... the latches seems cheaply built and the rubber bushings seem too stiff/brittle... but thats just my opinion.
Even with all that said, I wanted a 1-up bracket in black powder coat... Harley only sells the 1-up for Rushmores in chrome... so I took a black 1-up aftermarket mount, had to spread it a little so it fit the dock right and then swapped the hardware out from a chrome HD one that I had... then sold the one I didn't use (chrome) as an "aftermarket" one...
When you say “race bikes”, you mean like the race bikes in the Tour de France? What do those bikes weigh, like 15-20 pounds? If so, I think you’ll be fine with an aftermarket rack.
Ssitruc that is exactly what I am looking to use. The race bike is a one of two different BMX race bikes. The one weighs 15lbs and the other about 22lbs. I will only haul one at a time.
I ordered and have been using this one on eBay. Like stated above, I had to spread it out some to get it to fit right, but I've heard even the HD ones need to be stretched some. It seems to be of decent quality.
I've yet to detach it so I'm not sure how well it does but so far it seems quite strong. I also thought about switching out the hardware with the 2 up HD one I have but have seen no reason to do that as of yet.
All said, I'd be interested to see your setup once finished.
