I'd say this is a more legitimate worry than, say, someone worrying where to store their sunglasses.

I to thought this could be a real problem that is why I started this thread. I truly hope it saves an engine or two.

I had 3 of the M8 filters in my garage, one I used today the louvers looked good, another was pretty good, the other looked like the one in the pic with a lot of louvers looking like they were blocked. Ordered 2 HIFLO filters today, am going to switch away from the HD filters.

Okay, so now we have me in Ohio, hardheaded in St.Louis, MO, & you in the Pacific Northwest. I'd say this is a fairly widespread problem. I sure hope H-D puts out a service bulletin or at least says something to customers that bought oil filters or had their oil change performed by the dealer. I know they can't contact everyone, but anyone they have a phone number or email for (they have both for me, the woman I talked to in customer care had my email already when I called) that bought an oil filter recently should be notified to at least inspect the filter.

I'll say this before someone reads this thread & thinks we're picking on the MOCO- I myself love Harley-Davidson, and most guys I know do too. When I was a little kid owning one was a dream & my 1st streetbike was a XL883. Everyone in this thread is an owner as far as I can tell & we just don't want to see someone take a loss because of something that should be as simple as an oil filter. With the current supply chain issues, I can understand that stuff happens. Ford for instance, looks to have acres of trucks just sitting for want of computer chips & had to issue a recall recently for something involving the drive shaft on their trucks. Things are bad for every manufacturer right now is all I'm saying.

I have two new filters(for twin cam ) purchased last year from Ronnie's. There slotted but look good. I'm assuming the one in the bike now is also ok.

I have one 63731-99A filter left on shelf I bought about 3 years ago according to my oil change record. Actually it may be a little older than that It has the louvers but appears to be ok. Looking at these pictures on the phone is difficult at best later I'm going to look on the computer.

It always amazed me that when someone points out a misstep by the MoCo, or exposes many of their poor choices, people consider it bashing the Brand...

IMHO..... Pointing out deficiencies is not bashing.... it's sharing information...

I've been riding Harley motorcycles exclusively since 1978...... I have looked at other brands, but just can't see myself on anything but a Harley...

That doesn't mean I'm a cheerleader for anything, everything Harley....

Knowledge is power...

I'm always willing to discuss and/or share info on sub par Harley parts, designs, or practices... I don't see how it helps anyone, other than the shareholders, to excuse or try to hide the many blemishes Harley has had over the years....

I actually believe that discussing the issues and the fixes, makes the brand stronger.... Informed consumers minimize the chances that they'll have to deal with a major repair bill or a catastrophic failure..

There's nothing like a catastrophic failure to scare people off any brand....
