Bought a new HD filter today and was comparing it to another older new filter that i had on my shelve in the garage. The older filter has holes in it that the oil flows threw and the new filter has tiny little slots for the oil. Looks cheaply made too. Even the chrome looks likes ****. And damn HD wants $ 18 bucks for it too. Anyone run one of these 'new' filters and have you had any problems with them. I am sure the dealer puts a lot of them on.
I am a little gun shy after getting a Ford Filter from the local auto parts store that was defective and starved one of our cars for oil. Made lifter noise until i change it out. Only a day or two, but it might be harder to tell on the bike just because it's louder.
Im sure the people that designed the filter know a bit about flow rates, back pressure, filtration, etc. Ive never had a problem with the M8 oil filters in 40,000 miles. For that matter Ive never had a problem with any oil filter on any vehicle. Well, except for my 69 MG Midget. It had a canister that you removed, then replaced the element. There was a stupid cross section oval shaped o ring that you had to hold in place while screwing in the canister. And yeah once I got it pinched, and pumped out half the oil. After fixing that, and topping up the oil, I never had a problem with the motor.
Your assuming that the engineering department wins over the accounting department.
Never had an issue with any brand oil filter on any motorcycle (I have always used a filter specified for the application, not guessed at what would work).
Have never heard of an OEM oil filter causing a problem on a Harley Davidson engine.
Have you measured the area of the slots vs the area of the holes and determined the slots will restrict flow???
I have used Motorcraft filters exclusively on my cars and trucks for over 40 years without issue.

The filter i had the problem with was a Purolator for a 3.8 GM engine and had these same type of little slots in it. Never again will i buy one of these filters. I have changed a ton of filters in my life and this was the only one i ever had a problem with. Always used the correct filter for the application too. This HD filter just looks cheaper than the older type. They must of changed vendors. I would like to think HD knows what they are doing, but it's all about the bottom line with them.
Time will tell !

Post pics of your shitty filter, I am kind of curious to see that.
I'm curious too I usually buy them 2-3 at a time and I am down to my last one p?next time I'm near the shop I'll get two or three of them. But if there's a problem I'll be figuring out something before that.
