Probably a million posts about exhaust and all that but thought I'd post my own and figure some things out.
To start off, my '17 SGS is stock as far as the engine goes.
Put a set of Cobra Neighborhaters on thinking I'd get the sound I was looking for. Although it isn't bad, not nearly as good as I had hoped.
After looking through a bunch of articles and watching a lot of videos I'm starting to see I won't get the sound I am looking for with just a muffler swap.
I'm looking to do a whole new setup and I'm pretty set on getting SVT boneshakers for the mufflers.
Also want to have the S&S 475C cam installed.
As for headers, I've read both sides of the argument that de-catted stock headers are just as good as a lot of aftermarket sets. Looking for opinions on this.
For the stock de-catted headers, I have found a set off a '21 SG that they're asking $130 for. For aftermarket, I have found a set of the Jackpot headers locally that he's asking $350 for. They look really blued though, not sure if that's normal or not or if it matters at all. Says there's less than 300 miles on them. As for new, I was looking towards the RCX tormentors but also open to others.
So the biggest question is what direction to go with the headers. Opinions and recommendations welcome.
I bought a set of used Jackpot 2-1-2 headers that had blued and just followed what FuelMoto says about removing it, worked like a charm. Sound is very subjective but adding a cam is a step in the right direction.
As far as 'sound', there are 2 aspects to this - Volume and Tone. You can get great tone without massive volume i.e V&H Monsters. You can get volume but maybe not the tone, just rasp and noise. Dont laugh, I went to a dealer ride-in and listened to bikes roll in and spoke to the owners. I thought I was going to get another set of V&H and bought Rinehart 4.5s... I found the Youtube videos were not accurate interms of tone and you cannot gauge the volume.
21' Streetglide currently at local HD Dealer while in storage. Getting a true stage 1.
2-1-2 jackpot ss decatted header
already have cobra 909 slip ons
Power vision tuner
SE ventilator a/C
Will also be dyno'd
just want bike to run a little better and get rid of some of the heat. IF I ever decide to do a stage 2, everything that needs to done prior is already done. From what I've read and heard, M8 likes more air and flow than stock. If I get a little more sound, a little more tourqe and hp, bonus! We shall see. 😆
So I'm talking with the guy with the jackpot headers. My only concern with them is they're pretty blued. He said he did have it tintetuned when he put them on. Is the bluing a concern or nothing to worry about?

If they look in real good shape, aside from some bluing, if you like the price, go for it, clean them up a little and your factory heatshields will cover it anyway. The jackpot 2-1-2 comes in 2 different versions. 1 of them is a heavier guage stainless steel. Check the fuelmoto website if you havnt already. With all that being said, I would get the new ones for $150 more , just for the piece of mind but thats me. Lol. Just my 2 cents.

You are totally on the right track, now. Without the cam, you would just be chasing mufflers. The cam and tune makes all the difference in your sound.
Decatted header, or aftermarket, won't make that much difference until you start chasing numbers on the dyno.
You will love that cam, with a Powervision dyno tune, you are going to be set!
