Default Help Identifying Air Intake 2006 FLHRCI

Looking for help in determining whether the air intake on my 2006 Road King is a standard oem intake or if it was upgraded to an oem hi-flow. I purchased the bike from the original owner who stated the bike was stock from the dealer. The bike also has screaming eagle exhaust. I went to a local dealer to purchase a new filter for the intake and he said he thought it might be part of a stage 1 kit as it was not standard equipment. The original owner had no idea what a stage 1 was and had no recollection of it being part of the original purchase.

The bike has not been tuned and I plan to do so this spring. Want to consider if I should upgrade the intake before tuning or if the one that is on the bike is a hi-flow intake. I've been looking at S&S products and while they aren't super expensive I don't want to spend the money if there is no benefit.

That is the Screamin' Eagle High Flow Stage I intake backing plate.... it is NOT the OEM backing plate..

They currently only make them in black or chrome, that is the older grey finish backing plate.

You can get the round, high-flow filter, either from K&N (gauze filter that you oil) or you can get the HD Dry element high flow filter #29442-99D (my preference)...

Add a cover and you have a high flow air cleaner set up.....

I've used that backing plate on several Twin Cam engines: an '01 carb @ Stage I, '03 EFI w/big bore kit & headwork, '12 EFI @ Stage II (cams), and a '16 EFI @ Stage I.

There is no need to change that air filter for any Stage I, II, or mild Stage III or IV.... I finally had to switch that air filter on my 2016 Bagger to an S&S Stealth with the large filter, because I went to a 124" crate engine w/ 58mm throttle body and it needed more airflow...

If you have that air filter with it's high flow filter AND a Screamin' Eagle Exhaust, you have a Stage I mod on your engine and would benefit from a good tune...

Enjoy...!!

Thank you! The filter you prefer is the one I purchased at the dealer. The independent mechanic that works on my bike uses Powervision tuners and I will get it on the dyno at the beginning of the 2023 season. I recently had him do a Fueling cam tensioner upgrade and put on Cobra true dual headers at the same time. He said the bike is running lean and should be tuned.
