Default Do you really want to be Muffled???

Its time to wake up out there...

As some may already know, because it is happening in there State, City, or County. You ask What???

Well they are passing ordinances to curb motorcycle noise, which by Federal Law should be at a range of 80 decibals when heard from 50 feet. To give you an example of a decebal range, a lawnmower makes 90 decibals at 50 feet.

I myself (my opinoin is loud pipes saves lives).
But how loud is too loud??? Who has the right to tell me that I cannot put an aftermarket exhaust on my bike? Better yet, there is some ordinances out there that state, any bike 25 years and younger, must have origional type exhuast system or replaced with EPA approved origional type exhaust system. NO AFTER MARKET ALLOWED. They have started cracking down in numerous areas in my state alone. (Illinois). Alton police, and state police, have even gone as far as impounding rides and putting them on flat bed tow trucks.

This limits Riders' freedom to choose what products to use, replace parts.

Who is leading this ANTI NOISE GROUP? His name is Ted Rueter, he leads the national anti-noise group, and Director of Noise Free America...

Hmmm, more FREEDOM taken away from a FREE SOCIETY.

My rant at the momment is over. But will flare up again. Im tired of feeling like this has become a NANNY SOCIETY. That someone needs to tell me how, what, when, I can do something, and have their permission.

If you read the boxes of aftermarket pipes, they have a disclaimer on them saying something to the effect of "For Off-Road use ONLY" or "Not for Street use"
Meaning they are already illegal for street use in most areas. The time will come that we will have to take off our loud pipes and revert back to stock or another pipe that will meet the stock standards for volume. Vance&Hines and other aftermarket companies won't go out of business. In fact, they will likely make the most money they have in years if this happens as they have pipes that are quiet enough in their CAD computers, there is just not enough people that want a quiet system yet. Once the laws change, they start cranking out the quiet pipes and rake in the rewards.
I have loud pipes, I like them, but they are NOT a safety item. I drove fire trucks and ambulances for years, with air horns facing forwards and Q-sirens blaring and flashing strobe light bars going and people never heard or saw me. That phrase went out of fashion about 20 years ago when cars sound proofing became standard. Along with the sound proofing you add air conditioning, loud sterio systems, cell phones and rolled up windows and I don't care what pipes you have, they won't hear you. Instead, the person at the cafe you're rolling by will hear your pipes and they are the ones that will vote to get these pipes off the street.
Loud pipes annoy is the new slogan

I agree with Chicago Spike. I hate to admit it, but we did it to ourselves. As an aside....my wife and I recentlybuiltwhat will become our retirement home in Myrtle Beach, SC. The development in which we built our house does not allow motorcycles beyond the gated entrance. Why? Noise! In fact, I estimate that probably something in the neighborhood of 40% of the developments in Myrtle Beach do not allow motorcycles. Could it be that the sound of spring and fall bike weeks in Myrtle had something to do with such restrictions? I suspect so. We may like the sound of loud pipes...but we're outnumbered. And when those loud pipes irritate and anger enough of the general population, phones start ringing in the offices of local, county and state elected officials....and they react in ways which will help them to stay in favor with the majority. The fact that the AMA (American Motorcyclists Association), the most powerful lobby representing motorcycle riders in this county, has been able to do little or nothing to defer legislation regarding noise abatement and/or banning of motorcycles from specific communities/developments, speaks volumes.

Associated Press - August 22, 2007 3:25 PM ET
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Cities from New York to Denver are giving motorcyclists the silent treatment.
And that worries riders rights groups that fear that a wave of ordinances aimed at muffling Harley-Davidsons and other bikes will create a confusing patchwork of laws that motorcyclists won't be able to navigate.
The American Motorcyclist Association says people notice the one motorcycle that makes a lot of noise but not the dozens that pass by quietly.
Ordinances come in many forms. Some are against certain types of products - like mufflers that would rattle the apples off of trees. But others are aimed more at the drivers who may want to turn some heads.
The motorcycle industry trade group says enforcement can be subjective. So they're working on creating a test that would help equalize enforcement.
Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson says it is asking dealers to encourage riders to be considerate.[/align]

I'll agree that we did ourselfes in. Nothing ticks me off more than the guys down the street with the loud pipes that hit the main road and gun it every time, downing out conversations, the radio and/or the TV. This is evening more annoying at 10 or 11 at night when they are on the way back from the bar feeling good and making a racket.

My rides have always had pipes that produced a low deep rumble, not a loud racket. Everyone has had enough, and were all gonna pay.

Hopefully a compromise can be reached where only extremely louds pipses are bannned, and allow those that are within a realistic limit remain legal.

And, if anyone has been paying attention, the EPA has been after the industry for a while now over aftermarket products that effect emissions controls. The pipes are the first step, next it will be modifications that alter EPA compliance.

I'll bet this got started by some guy getting woke up by a bike with drag pipes. Probibally cracking his throttle through the neighborhood at 3a.m.
See what not being considerate will get us.

These are the exact idiots that give all bikers that bad name. One guy rolls through the quiet town with straight pipes and takes off from the stop light at full throttle to get to the speed limit of 25mph. Everyone at the outdoor restaurant has to stop talking, some clap their hands over their ears. What is the topic of conversation after this ACTUALLY HAPPENS in my town with me and my wife and her sister? At nearly all of the tables you could hear, "I Hate those bikers and their loud bikes! They shouldn't be allowed on the street anymore!"

It is the few idiots that makes us all pay for their inconsiderateness

Yeah, its that one or two that seem to ruin it for everyone.

I dont run straight pipes on my bikes. I have ridden with a few that have. And yes, they are loud.

However, if you take a very close look at some of the aftermarket slip on exhaust. These exhaust will not meet with some of the regulations that are being proposed out there, because the regulation being placed on the decibal meter. Take a closer look at your pythons, rousch, rienharts, sampsons, vance in hinds, and so on.

I made a few phone calls today, checking out even more information about this. Sister works for the State Police. There going to go as far as checking to make sure that your whole exhaust system is origional for that bike. In other words, If your bike did not come from the factory with TRUE DUELS on it. The will start to fine for that as well. And you will have 60 days to show that you have converted the bike back to origional factory setup.

I third.

These are the idiots that are the source of this serious and real threat . In my town this is now being enforced. In the long run some enjoyment is going to be taken out of our hobbie and way of life.

The argument loud save lives is not true. Common sense and vigilance in the seat save lives. Driving defensively as if you are invisible save lives. Drunk drivers don't hear or see you they just run over you.

Goldwing drivers do not have proportionaly more accidents.

The psycho babble that we lose our rightsjust pisses me off even more. Abuse any right and you lose it. Especiallybecause some jack#$ abused our rights and can't tell the the difference when to lay off the throttle. Real cool because of him or her we might be riding singers.

Getting pissed off or indicating defiance to this article is ignorant. Reading and understanding this article crucial. We are, not will lose our ability to pick equipment we prefer is in motion. It has been legislated and is now being enforced because of the a few idiots.

Sorry to flame I just hate have my life ruled because of a few Morons.

John
