Default Rear tire recommendations for heavy bikes - Shinko 999?

Just about time to put some new rubber on the back of this old Ultra Classic (2007) and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation. The last set of Metzlers left a very bad taste in my mouth, so they’re out. Does anyone have first hand experience with the new Shinko 999’s long term?

I take a lot of long trips through the mountains and lots of interstate riding, so comfort and longevity are key factors for me.

Have you tried dipping them in taco sauce for a better taste?

Shinkos are known for higher stick and lower mileage. $ for $ IMHO Dunlop American Elites are best all around tire for big tourers.

I could be wrong but I was always under the impression Shinko's were lesser tires. I have always run Metzler 888's. My current research has led me to either Metzler Cruisetec's or the Dunlop American Elites as my next tires once my stock rubber wear out. I am NOT a fan of the stock tires, but even lesser fan of replacing tires that still have tread...lol.

YMMV.

John, what about the Metz didn’t you like? I ran the 880’s and then 888’s for years, never had an issue.
I swapped to Dunlop American Elite for the mileage, and they handle & ride about like the Metzlers.

Yep, what TriGeezer said. Dunlop American Elites all the way.

I had a set of Metzlers on my Victory. The rear only lasted 6500 miles of regular/average riding. And the front developed a strange wear pattern where the edges of the tread blocks ended up “raised” (that’s the only way I can think of to describe it). It created a vibration and really shitty handling. I managed to eek out 12,000 miles out of the front one.

This sort of behavior is apparently commonplace among Metz tires - or so I’m lead to believe.

Shinko and long term aren't something you'll ever hear used in the same sentence in a positive manner.
