I have an 07 Ultra and need to remove the license plate so I can install a vanity plate. I keep turning the bolt but it doesn't come out. I can barely feel behind the plate and it seems like there is a nut back there. I don't seem to be able to get a crescent wrench in there to hold the nut. I tried to remove the bracket from the tour pack but the nut turns and doesn't back out.

What's the trick here?

Use the tools that came with your bike. Put a flathead screwdriver into the head of the screw (if that’s the type of head it uses) then hold the bolt in the back with the proper sized wrench and turn the screw head left. It will come loose. You may have to jiggle the license plate holder in order to get the bolt loose enough to pull out. Then, repeat the process in reverse to attach vanity plate.

Just glue the new one over the top of the old one, or put a side mount on, and just spray paint over the old plate...[:'(]
Be sure the glue you use is JBWeld.

Maybe it's that metric thing up there in Canada.

Not really an option. I'm swapping plates with my old Gold Wing. It had a vanity plate and the HD came with a regular one. I'm gonna take a look at it this morniing with more light. I need to find out what's keeping a skinny little wrench from where I want it to go.

Metric is a PITA up here, but no, not in this case. It was easy to take the plate off of the Gold Wing. It's a 1975 and was made back in the days where you replaced the plate every year. They pretty much had to make it accessible. Now, we have little stickers to put on the plate. So now, the plate comes off when you sell the bike or you get a vanity plate.

Speaking of metric, it's a shame that HD didn't put a mph scale on the Canadian bikes. That way, you wouldn't have to do mental math when you ride in the US. I noticed the US models didn't have km/h either. Cars do - on both sides of the border.

I may be reduced to using the HD toolkit. It's not a flat-head screw but a 7/16" hex bolt, but I see what you mean. The flat wrench I'm using is pretty skinny but we'll see if the HD wrench will fit.

Truth be told, I removed and re-installed one of the cylinder heads on the Gold Wing, in addition to other work. The complicated stuff is easy. It's the simple stuff that takes the most time.

Cutting torch, just a little heat and it will pop right off..had to do that to my brothers bike, when it was all said and done we replaced the rear fender, struts, rear tire, left saddle bag,and his rear top box. but by golly we got it off. and he saved all the money that the shop would have charged him.
If I may ask, why do you want a lic. plate that says Vanity??
