Default RKC Saddlebag Maintenance

I can use some guidance when washing the bike specifically the saddle bags. My bike accumulates some dust while parked in the garage (working on getting a cover for it).

I remove the saddlebags when I wash to get to the areas behing the bags. What are the steps to take to clean/wash the saddlebags ?? Keep in mind that I have a layer of dust on the bags !!

Thanks,

Ray (twoseas)

On my old Heritage I just washed the bags along with the rest of the bike. After the bags dry... treat them to some leather conditioner... job done.

Hi Ray,

I do the same thing as Eric, but add H-D Leather Dressing to make them shine. While they are shiny I just take them off when washing the bike.

I take them off and wipe them down with a damp cloth, so they don't get soaked. Then I apply the HD Leather Dressing (make sure you get it into the seams) and let them sit in the sun for a half hour or so.

Listen to him..Soap can remove the oils from leather. Dust needs dusting not soap. If it needs more use a damp rag. If it needs more than that use a Spray leather cleaner.

If it's just dust, try a Swiffer duster, works great on the whole bike (let it cool down, believe me). Then I use the Harley Leather Dressing. If I get some mud or heavy dirt I use a damp cloth.

I treat mine just like a $800 pair of shoes which is really what they are. Would you drive your convertible through the car wash with the top down? Think of them as the most expensive leather shoes in your closet and take care of them the same way. You wouldn't wet those expensive shoes so don't wet those saddlebags either. Wipe them down, dry, with a soft cloth or use a car duster or even a horsehair shoe brush. Clean them then treat them the H-D leather dressing or a similar product. If they, heaven forbid, get scuffed, again go to the shoe analogy and apply some good old shoe polish cream and buff out the blemishes.

More work then on a standard Road King but it is the price you pay for a different look.
