Pressing inboard on the shifter and having that passed on to the transmission through a twelve inch rod (approximate) and 2 ball joints makes no intuitive sense to me. I would suspect that moves the front pivot shaft from a worn spot where it binds to an unworn spot that moves more freely. With that in mind, I have found that brake lube on the pivot shaft works wonders for free, easy shifting and it lasts quite well between scheduled maintenance mileages.
I still have a heel shifter. Placing my heel on the rear ARM and toe on the front arm and slowly rotating my foot will click the transmission into neutral without the frequent "overshoot" that using just the toe or just the heel causes. That and the well lubed front pivot shaft works well for me, perhaps no one else, but suggest you try it if you are having a problem.
