I use a T-bag, which I feel personally will hold as much stuff as a tourpak. One of my reasonings with the trailer would be to ease the burden of trying to pack so tight. Heres my idea in making one. It would ressemble the set of the n-line trailer with only using a single wheel in the rear. Im thinking of using a front wheel/caliper off a 600cc Honda Silverwing Scooter 12". I want to build a frame constisting of two pieces of tubing joined at the toungue and then bow out to join again at the rear wheel. Atop the frame I would like to attach a low-profile cargo carrier that is commonly used atop SUV's. I would also like to use the caliper with a surge brake setup in the toungue to help in stopping (just an idea, I dont know that its needed or practical). I think It could be a great setup in that it would be low cost, and versitile in that you can use the carrier with both your SUV, and bolt it to the trailer frame. Cost for the carrier is $150. Cost for the wheel setup would be $800. So im thinking less than a grand. The link is a pic of the carrier I have in mind.
Definitely interesting. I'm guessing the wheel would drag around at the back side with the polls going back to the axle to support the actual carrier? Do you have to get the thing registered through DMV? Is it like any other trailer? Are there any kind of inspections you have to go through? Might be stupid questions, but I'm curious either way. You would probably need lights on the thing too. Seems like if you have that much stuff hanging that far back you would want to have it seen by some moron on his cell phone.
Certainly a lot more room in that than the T-bag or tourpack. How would you secure it to the bike and keep it from disappearing in the middle of the night? The other thing about the Tbag and the tour pack is you can carry them into the tent or hotel room...
Random thoughts and questions that come to mind. I've never dealt with trailors, and I'm guessing you've thought your way through them, so I'll be interested in your responses.
Lets see, to answers those questions. The frame would support the carrier. I most likely would have to get it inspected to aquire a tag for it. Its kind of like the n-line trailer (link above), with characteristics. I would wire both tailights and a tag light on the frame, probably something like those oval led truck lights (commonly seen of commercial trailers). I would also make the carrier removable, and you could possibly unbolt it from the frame and put it either in your tent or hotel room. The frame would remain attached to the bike, secured with some sort of lock (havent studied that part yet). Its still just an interesting thought as of now. I think it could provide a cost efficient alternative to a more expensive trailer without giving up anything in the process.
I like the idea of it being removable. The more I think about it, the more involved it seems. I'd like to see what you come up with, and there is not doubt, it would be a lot nicer than shoving everything in a TBag, and, I'm guessing that thing is a lot more water proof than any Tbag as well.
