I like the Idea of the water cooled touring class Harley-Davidson. but not the Porche/Harley engine, It would be so easy to re-desigh the heads and jugs for water, leave the engine a pushrod motor.. Then you would retain the sound and looks of the Harley, butless heat... The radiator could be designed to where the air ducts would reverse the air flow thrugh the radiator from the back and down under the bike.. It would look kinda like the V-Max styling..
It's going to happen, just hope they keep the HD in Harley-Davidson...
they could get the VRSCA motor to be more touring friendly by changing the cams and the FI maps.
Kawi has been doing it for years,, the ZX11d Kawasaki (ninja) motor with smaller carbs and different cams is what powers the ZRX 1100, the ZX12R motor detuned powers the ZZR , and with a different head the ZRX1200. We put the ZZR cams in the ZRX for extra ooomph. The new Concours has a detuned ZX14 motor.. I would love to get one of those and set it up to the same specs as the ZX14 talk about a fast sport/touring bike.
Where am I going with this? If MoCo wants to water cool they can adapt the Porsche/MoCo engine to make power at low revs it can be done. If they are going to design a new engine, I think it is going to take more than a couple of years to research/develop/ make a few then get it into production. If it isn't already in the pipeline I think 2011 is a wee bit optimistic. Does anyone know how long the VRSCA took from conception to sales floor?
I would expect 2010 or 2011 when the new EPA mandates take affect.
I've considered doing a V-rod mod to a glide, but I too don't like the rod frame. Just is not aesthetically pleasing to my eye.
EPA-wise, H-D is good to go nationally with the '08 spec California bike through 2011. But, the CA spec tightens further in 2010 and, if they can't make the 96" meet that spec, they're going to have to do something different for 2010 or give up the CA market (which is huge).
