First gear: getting started
Second gear: school crossings
Third gear: boulevard speeds, steep climbs at slow speeds
Fourth: Parkway speeds 40-45 mph, and hot acceleration on the on ramps
Fifth: Speeds under 60 and above 45, finish merging into 80 mph traffic
Sixth: Steady speeds above 60 mph, and go like heck at 80+

The key is running at or above 2000 rpm in first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. Sixth should be at or above 2200 IMHO. I love this six speed.[8D]

What!!! I don't use 6th until above 75....

On the highway I keep it in 4th-5th (<70mph) in case I need a burst of speed to avoid cagers.

I must be runnin too hard [sm=badbadbad.gif]

It's been reported that with the addition of the IDS the manual shift-points are very reasonable. I was shifting, as I said above at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 all along, but with Rush 2" mufflers, K&N airbox, and PC-III, I can venture below those points without too much fanfare.

With the IDS drive in , I can shift lower , generally not below 2500 rpm though.

Hey folks, I was just wondering whatspeeds you shift at with the six speed tranny. Just trying to get an idea where other people shift at.

Thanks
Tac
Well, I can say that I don't go anywhere near that nearly pointless 6th gear unless I'm above 70. Everything else is fully dependent on riding style du jour. I don't mind revving the big twin.

I shift @ 2500 rpms
You should double that now and then. It won't break, I promise. And it actually gets pretty fun above 3500 RPM.

Hi all,

These bike need to be run best when run at least to 3000 rpm before a shift and maybe 3400 when shifting in to 6th. Anything less and it's a wonder why people think these bikes clatter. Also that's when the power starts to come on too!

Shifting is different for me with this 96 inch motor, thirty years of riding and I now watch my tack more than the sound. I shift at around 2700 or higher, I hit 55 in fourth gear before thinking about 5th and at 75 I am going to 6th. BTW I had the fifth gear clatter pretty bad before I started using this method of shifting.

any thoughts?
