IDS Pics
Every time you change rear tire you can easily inspect the rubbers in the IDS. No big deal.
Haven't hear if HD will offer the rubbers as a separate replacement item, although I am pretty sure they will.

I'm not going to comment on the "crappy design" crap in the post. It's a good design. Nor the notion we're being screwed if we don't purchase something we don't need or should've gotten free.
Like a pair of locking pliers is called a "Vice-Grip" or a pair of slip-joint pliers is called a "ChanneLock"? Lovejoy is one maker of spider couplings.
The dealers probably have buckets full of spare elastomer bushings since they're always failing under the high-power demands of the Vrods, which have also used this system since introduction, right? Oh, wait. They're not?

BTW in the field mechanic and machinery trades this is commonly called a LOVEJOY connector.
Also yes you will need to check the rubber every couple years depending on how you ride. But will HD offer the rubber separately?

I understand there are many manufacturers, I said we commonly call them Lovejoy.
Lovejoy is just one of many brands, but in our area is the most common one.
Some people never cease to amaze me about nitpicking little things.
But your first sentence is the most accurate!
well I don't have a BMW or a metric and I don't visit their sites, so would be pointless to do so.
I'm not really bashing the engineers, but ratherHD itself.
The top where pass the buck stops. They are so intently worried about their own paycheck they don't care if they screw you over, by making a shoddy model (07 touring), then quietly do a running upgrade to fix their screwup, and then expect you to pay for the parts to fix yours.
Hey HD is not the only one that does this. In way or another entire corporate America does it.
But you folks that just roll over and willingly take it in the *** from them, just encourage them to keep doing it.
HD claims it's the "power pulses from the engine" causing the problem. Well if that is true how come it isn't apparent in other models and how come 01-06 people that upgraded to 95+ engine sizes don't have the problem too.
Why is it prevalent in only in the 07's with the "new" 6 speed and now apparently in the 08's so they installed the "fix" at the factory to prevent the complaints?
You all got a problem with your scoot from factory, you think should be fixed, stop rolling over and playing dead! And spending more money at the moco for the fix. The FTC and Congress GAVE you a means to fight back.
USE IT!!! You just might get the fix completely free. But you got to be willing to fight for your rights and satisfaction.
Stop being such pacifists!!
"wear ... Deteriorate" just semantics. Same meaning in this case.
In the field the "lovejoys" I work with are inspected and replaced on a regular basis. some last a month in their environment other a couple years.

Choochoo: You never fail to dissappoint.
1. In the interest of accuracy (what a concept). In the industrial world they are referred to as power transmission couplings. There are may manufactures, Lovejoy just happens to be one of them.
2. If you are going tocontinue your BASH HARLEY campaignby trashing the HD engineers for designing this tranny and compensator you better throw theBMW engineeres that also designed a tranny that required the same type of rubbermounted compensator sprocket. I would aslo suggest you include all of the metric engineers that did the same.
3. Harley recommends you check the rubber components of the I.D.S. at every rear wheel tire replacement. The rubber components do not "wear" they deteriorate over time due to the heat generated by compressing and relaxing. I've heard from guys that had metric bikes with this tpe of sprocket indicate they didn't require replacement up to 100,000 miles. Of course your individual riding style will affect the life of this component.
These are of course facts... not opinion.

What had changed for '07 was the bigger engine via a longer stroke and a change in the first and last reductions between the crank and tire.
It's maybe not the quietest combination around but it's certainly a good design and it works quite well.
You don't even have a dog in the fight...
Well put Glens. I looked for the 07 in the profile as well
Engineering is always a work in progress. Automakers do not recall their autos to make all of the past models the same as there current ones. We can either cry about it or just do the upgrade (if you want it) and continue riding a great bike.
Just an FYI on the durabilty of this system. My metric that has a similar system to the Harley IDS has been working hard since 1979 and is showing no signs of deterioration. Btw I think I will call Yamaha andcomplain that the 08's are smoother and quieter than my 79.
Plow64 thanks for the pics and info. That was the point of this thread.

The only thing that bothers me about this IDS purchasing is I think Harley should have done this for people with the '07's at their cost. We owneda Honda Goldwing GL1800 several years ago and there were several "Recalls" on it for "parade speed" overheating, frame welding problems, and redesign of the saddlebag lever linkage. Honda never said "well we will just sell the fixes to our customers at additional costs". I gotta admit, their company is very quick and considerate on issuing Recalls over Harley.
We now own an '06 RK Classic with Non-Recalled 8* injectors and an '07 SE Ultra with Non-Recalled, no IDS 5th gear clatteric. Does HD Motor Company even know thereis a such thing as a Recall or are they just so wrapped up in corporate greed that they just say screw it...let 'em pay more attitude.

No I don't own an 07.
I enjoy coming here and reading the posts and even gaining some knowledge.
But I'm also here to prod you guys into standing up for your rights.
If there is something wrong with your scoot, that you personally believe should be a warranty item, stop being a pacifist.
Stand up and take positive action. The means are available to you.
You can bet HD has people reading this and other forums, so they know what is happening out here.
They hear your numerous complaints here. But they don't see the same magnitude of complaints flooding their corporate customer service.
They don't see you taking positive action by boycotting their products.
what they see is you whining a little here and doing nothing in the end, or worse buying another one of their products to fix something on your bike, giving them even more of your hard earned money.
So they have no incentive to fix anything before or after the fact.
If their corporate office was flooded with written complaints requesting or demanding satisfaction and then followed up with complaints to the FTC they would do something.
But no you all come here whine and let off steam and do nothing.
But that's your choice.
HD heard your complaints on the clatter etc, so they made a fix for the 08's.
But they didn't get enough complaints in writing to the main office or a FTC complaint, so you all got nothing, which is what you deserve!
Do nothing, get nothing!
Yep I sound hard nosed here, I meant to. No apologies from me on this subject.

That language, "you folks", prompted me to look at your profile where I see you don't even own an '07 or '08. Unless you haven't updated it since...
If that's true, what gives you the right to bitch about them, anyway?
Maybe because the primary ratio to the clutch was different and because the displacement was garnered by an increase in bore and not in stroke?
Well, the "new" 6 speed is only new to the non-dynas for '07. It's the same part as the one on the dynas in '06. Was there a problem with it then? If so, how come you claim it only came about in '07? If not, how come you claim it's a problem with the tranny?

Hey ChooChoo,I got a 29 Ford......After reading your post I'm taking it back to the dealer and insist they install a CD player and air bags for free!
I experienced my first IDS (rubber hubber)on a 1970 Honda 90 scrambler back in '71.....Never knew it was there till I removed the rear tire to patch the tube.......I shoulda scalped them Jap bastards then, but I hadn't read your posts and didn't know I'd been ripped off with a clunky tranmission that required a rubber drive hub to make it smooth.
GladI met you tho.....I'm ready for them NOW!
