The IDS is not new to HD. The item was used years ago and discontinued. The new carbon fiber belt is the reason for the reintroduction of the IDS due to the less resiliant nature of the new belt. Previous years may benefit by it's ability to do as advertised but a retrofit by HD to previous years is not justified. Also, it is not a safety item so it is considered a custom option that anyone can make the purchase of. The earlier belt, if properly adjusted doesn't need the IDS anyhow....

Harley Davidson is very good about keeping track of safety issues with their products and will continue to recall a motorcycle far past the warranty if the issue is not signed off as corrected. If anyone doubts this to be true, I will post a copy of one received yesterday regarding an '06 Street Bob that we own - regarding a battery fastener bolt that has been corrected and apparently not signed off by the dealer.

No need for you to prod anybody to do anything. There's nothing wholesale wrong with the '07 drivetrain, therefore there won't be a recall. If there was, there would be. The few legitimate problems, as with any production-made item, have and will be addressed under warranty.

If you want your bike shinier, you can buy chrome. If you want the exhaust to sound different, you can buy mufflers. If you want your drivetrain quieter, you can buy the IDS. It's just about the cheapest of those three optional items.

Please tell me you are kidding , "Maybe it was planned ? " I am not defending H-D on this but it is a upgrade not a safety issue. Talk about doom and gloom ,WOW.

Well I was waiting for picts of this. But based on the descriptions though I had a general idea of it.
This IDS is NOTHING NEW. It has been used on equipment and machinery for power transfer for a about hundred years in various forms.
HD just did a cinfiguration modification to fit the bike.
And since HD "developed" this to smooth out the ride and made it standard on 08 and so if would fit the 07 bikes, they suckered you all out of your money once again. They have in fact admitted there is or was a problem and this was "a fix". Cheaper than recalling your bikes under warranty and fixing them right.
Bet ya the engineer that designed the crappy tranny designed this too. Maybe it was a "plan". Make a crappy tranny then make a fix and charge for it??

BTW in the field mechanic and machinery trades this is commonly called a LOVEJOY connector.
Also yes you will need to check the rubber every couple years depending on how you ride. But will HD offer the rubber separately?

I agree with you there. i have an '06 RG. And the IDS does not apply to my bike . But every now and then i get a letter from H-D requesting me to bring my "Other Woman" in to have something fixed or replaced before it goes bad. Once My regulator started going bad the same day as the letter came to bring her in for a Factory recall. So H-D is awear of the problems, heince the IDS kit. Yeah it should have been a recall Item. Did they fix it on the 08s (kits standard on 08)
The next time there is a H-D Demo ride day at your local Dealer, go. I'm sure there will be someone there that wants to here customer input. The more input they get the better the product. H-D wants to sell bikes not problems.

1st part, it don't work that way, those are after the fact add on's, not original equipment that came with the car factory fresh, and now way too much time has passed since the warranty (if any) was in effect and you probably are not the original owner.

Part 2 I don't get your point
did you know then that the tranny was bad or whatever (before you bought the bike), and had to go buy the rubber hubber out of pocket?
No, you didn't.

My point is, HD came out with a new tranny and engine on the 07.
did they know at the factory about the potential problem. Maybe NOT. It may not have shown up in the models on the test tract.
But it did show up in real world testing.
Most took it to a dealer and got the it's normal thing or you're lugging or whatever.
some may have went to the MOCO, but not enough. and those that did, apparently stopped there and just went ahead and took it in the shorts or traded in for a new 08.
MOCO relies on you all to do that as do other manufacturers, because they don't want to spend their money to fix something and they know they won't have too, because they play the odds and know you will cry uncle and go away with your proverbial tails between your legs when they say "BOO"!.
You know it's not that hard and doesn't take that much time to file the complaint.
Personally I've given moco til this tuesday (10/15/07) to answer me on my complaint. Told them if I don't get an appropriate response of a positive fix, I will file with the FTC. I will provide documentation and invoices of attempts to have it fixed and email addresses of others who have the same complaint on their bikes.
Will it work? who knows. But if you don't at least try then guaranteed it won't work.
Speaking of air bags, does anybody here know when the first air bags were installed and on what car. (yeah I know cars are off topic)

Hey ChooChoo,I got a 29 Ford......After reading your post I'm taking it back to the dealer and insist they install a CD player and air bags for free!

I experienced my first IDS (rubber hubber)on a 1970 Honda 90 scrambler back in '71.....Never knew it was there till I removed the rear tire to patch the tube.......I shoulda scalped them Jap bastards then, but I hadn't read your posts and didn't know I'd been ripped off with a clunky tranmission that required a rubber drive hub to make it smooth.

GladI met you tho.....I'm ready for them NOW!

Probably Mercedes Benz in the mid '70s.

HD did not introduce a new transmission in 2007. It was already in service for a full year on the 2006 Dyna line.

Finally, as with most manufacturers of anything, they reserve the right to make improvements at any time to any product without incurring obligation. It's printed boldly and early in the user's manual that came with the bike.

And is printed on damn near every spec sheet for any product I have ever seen. Harleys are already expensive enough without asking the company to make every bike a retro custom. The drive belt is the primary reason for the IDS anyhow - it's harder, tougher and less resiliant than previous years.
