No problem. I actually did the SE air cleaner and a PCIII long before I changed pipes. I think the PCIII was most effective in reducing engine heat and improving performance.
You're not really doing a stage 1 without the pipes...................but of course you can do the air cleaner and PCIII alone. Adding any fuel adjustment system will help out with the heat issue............they come so lean from the factory that any fuel addition will make a world of difference.
I went in cycles about just doing that with out pipes. Then I figured I might as well help out that formula a little more with some slip-ons that sound good but not lowd. Just my 2 cents
I did the Stage I on my 02 Ultra. Tried true duals with SE slipons, but didn't like the noise. Went back to stock headers and mufflers, and I think the bike actually did better with stock exhaust and Stage I. Later, I went with Mackie geared cams, and that really perked up the 88ci engine, still with stock exhaust. My .02
Just add any Fuel Management System will help with the Heat Issue... It's mainly caused by the bike being adjusted to meet EPA Standards which gives the bike a LEAN CONDITION. Lean = More Heat
A complete Stage 1 will also increase the performance of your bike... More Air - More Fuel - Less exhaust restruction...
If you stay out of the throttle and ride it just like you did, mileage should only be a few percent worse at worst. It might stay the same and it might even get better (needing to use less throttle to do the same things). In practice, however, it's hard to resist playing with the extra power you'll have, and that'll decrease mileage noticeably. But most folks don't mind it when that happens, for some strange reason...
Ideally you should always balance modifications , i.e. if you go to a less restricive intake , you should do the same for the exhaust. The SE slip-ons for 07 + are significantly quiter than previous models ( I had them on my 99 and 02) . With stock headers they aren't much louder than stock, just deeper.
thanks for the great input. I think I'll do intake and fuel management first, see how it runs and then may go to SE slip ons. I appreciate your thoughts, this is a great forum!
