Default Mechanical trouble 05 Ultra

Greetings,

I have been having trouble with my 05 Ultra. Starts off running rough, rough starting too. Once it fires up, just does not sound as smooth as it normally does and is much louder. All stock, no engine mods or tranny or exhaust mods. I have changed plugs, no help. Have a lifetime airfilter and was cleaned, no help. All fluids look fine and at correct level. Engine light has come on a few times also during riding. Lasts for about 30 seconds then goes out. Have also had engine light come on at start up for about 10 seconds, then it goes out.I always use premium gas and there is no hesitationwhen running.

I'm no mechanic but if it is a simple fixI am willing to try. Any help or ideas on the problem and how to fix?

Thanks

I would check the CKP (crankshaft position sensor). It is located on the left side of the motorcycle, between the end of the oil filter and the shifter lever. It is held into the engine case with a socket head bolt. Remove the bolt and pull the sensor out. It does have an o-ring attached to the sensor to prevent any crankcase fluids from being spewed out when it is running.
Clean the end of the sensor and check to make sure the sensor is not coming apart on the end. The sensor has a magnetic end which reads the crankshafts position. Sometimes fine metal particles (almost like dust) will accumulate on the end of the sensor and cause it to misread the signal it should from the crankshaft.
This could cause the "check engine light" to come on and go off.
The sensor reports to the ECM and tells the engine what "stage" it is in. Thus the ECM knows when to tell the injectors and coil when to do their job.
This one is easy to check and takes hardly anytime at all.
The next one is not so easy......The throttle plate (butterfly) in the throttle body could have caused the throttle body to crack on the cable side and thus it is affecting your air/fuel ratios. I suggest that this one be looked at by a technician. This one is or was a regular problem caused by improper cable adjustment. Improper cable adjustment allowed the throttle plate to be slammed opened anytime you went to full throttle......a bunch of slammings and the listed damage would result.
Good Luck.

Sounds like a fuel system problem...ECM has set a code...you can pull the code up yourself and see what it is, but you'll need the Electrical Diagnositcs manual for your model year. The check engine light should go off and not come back on after starting.

One other thing...have you checked all your battery connections lately? A ground problem can deal you fits...check the terminals and ensure they are both clean and tight.
