I use a fuzzy logic, manual heat management program. If I'm idling (e.g., traffic jam) and ambient air temperature + engine radiant heat initiates personal discomfort, I shut the engine down until forward motion is required. On the other hand, air circulating through the rear cylinder with the heat management program (if I had it), may cool a running engine down more effectively than shutting it down.
The heat managemant download does work, and it isn't all that noticeable when the rear cylinder kicks in & out.
Whathappens is the fuel and spark to the rear cylinder are shut off via the ECM when the temp reaches a certain point and the engine is at idle- like in a traffic jam on a hot day. With the cylinder not firing it is producing no heat, soengineheat is reduced. That cylinderalsoacts like a big air pump- sucking in cool air & pumping out hot air, further cooling the engine. At the same time, the mixture to the front cylinder is richened- which also aids in cooling. Hit the throttle and the ECM turns the fuel & spark on to the rear cylinder again and off you go.
I haven't had the d/l done on my bike yet, but I've ridden two bikes that have.
I plan to have it done on mine soon as I get around to it...
lost1 i think you are the only one that has ever mentioned on how well the download works. i have been contenplating it for awhile now to have it down or not. i have the fuel pak on my bike and from what i hear at idle the fuel pak "shuts" down. therfore the ecm is now in control. when you crack the throttle the fuel pack kicks in. with that download it would help at idle with the heat.

you can have this download done free under warranty if you want. then if you don't like it you can have it removed free under warranty too. one time only deal.

You're right- the ECM is in control at idle, and the Fuel Pak kicks in off-idle. I got that from V&H tech support on the phone.
I e-mailed the largest of the three local dealerships, (all one owner.) and asked if the IDS install was included in thier "elbow grease" promotion and what his lowest out the door price would be. He did'nt e-mail me back, but called me at home the next day. Very nice guy, John, the service manager. He told me the IDS is included & would be thru the end of Jan. $289. otd. I'm taking my bike in in a couple weeks.
