Well, I made the mistake of purchasing the dealers maintenence program when I purchased my new08 RG. It seemed like a good deal fro me at the time since I do ride quite a few miles. What I failed to factor in was my stress level of letting the dealer ever touch my bike.
So, bike comes home from 1000 mile service couple of days ago. Nice weather yesterday so I go out for a ride, the OL and me head for the ocean about 35 miles away, a trip we've made hundreds of times on our old 01 RG. As soon as I hit the edge of town and run it up to cruising speed I feel this constant buzzing vibration up through theleft floorboard any time I am over 3100rpm. I am a pretty big guy so I typically cruise above 3000. By the time I've gone maybe 5 miles, the tingling has gone all the way up my leg and my foot is going numb. Of course I turn back, take it home and park it. Leg is now numb top to bottom. I call in to dealer left message with svc dept but it was almost closing time so I expect I'll hear from em today.
I guess when I bought this goofy service contract, I forgot that every single time my previous bike went to the dealer, I had to fix it when I got it back and issues were seldom corrected. I had to fix two small things before I could even ride yesterday, starting to think maybe I made a huge mistake buying this maintnence program...
Anyone have any ideas of where to start tracking this thing. It is a very steady vibration above 3100 in the left floorboard ONLY! The best way I could describe it is "buzzy" or "high ptched" vibration if that makes sense, althoughthere is no accompanying sound and it DOES fluctuate with the rpms. I have hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt so I am not imagining it and it was not there prior to the recent service. I can't figure out what they would touch that could cause it. They did switch from dino to Syn in the primary. Could it be in the primary? of course, no more inspection cover, I have heard that there has been an issue with the primary self adjusting so it's too tight... I am open to any ideas on things to check, please HELP!
Did you check the fluid level in the transmission? If you think you are draining the crankcase, but drain the transmission instead and then refill the crankcase and not check the transmissinon, you could run around with no lube in the transmission and you will get a vibration in the left floor board.
Don't ask me how I know that.
I didn't check that but I will. It was at a supposedly dependable dealership, Can't imagine them making that mistake but if they did, I know I'm gonna get at least most of my money back from the main program I purchased!
One other thing I DID notice was that on shifts it seemed to make a much harder/louder clunk than before...
This was the smoothest bike I had ever ridden until I sent it to the dealer for the first time for something as simple as a 1000 mile service, I can't say that anymore
The problem could be as simple as a loose mounting screw on the footboard. I had a similar problem a few years ago, although as I do most of my own servicing I could only blame me!
Has anything else been changed? The worst problems with my Glide were from an accessory I fitted and forgot about! Took me months to track that vibration down (also on the left). Threw that partin the trashbin....
Your first port of call should be the dealer and ask him nicely to sort things out. If you demand your money back first he won'tfeel the same way about putting things right.
Many years ago a friend and I bought the same model of bike. A few months later they both suffered the same serious engine failure. My friend took the shouting bullying route and got very little help - I was a model of politeness and got things sorted at their expense. Learn by that experience!
You did not say whether you had any modifications made when you bought it. I had the Power Commander installed in my 07 ultra and I had real bad vibration problems (vibrated both passenger foot pad mounting bolts broke in half, and the horn mount vibrated in half,) I took it back to dealler and had PC removed and standard stage I download installed and the recall calibration from Harley. Now, it don't vibrate, just smooth riding...Bldr
All still stock, found upper front motor damper loose, tightened it up (guessed on adjustmentsince no manual available yet) and removed the rear shifter (I never use it and it just gets in the way), also had to tighten up the rear floorboard. Now she is as sweet as can be!!
So much for "reputable dealer service" ! I have a maint program that I wish I'd never bought but the invoice for this 1000 mile svc, which as we all know is change the fluids, look for loose stuff and test ride, was $424.18! :yikes: I'd sell that maint program back to them for thirty cents on the dollar, I HATE sending my bike to the dealer!
I hope you just tightened the mounting bolts and did not adjust the link. If you adjusted the upper stabilizer link, you just mis-aligned your bike.
Alignments are done by the rear swingarm bolt and The stabilizer links top and bottom are adjusted to hold it in that position after the proper alignment procedure is done.
Good Luck.
