Default engine noise

06 SG, 30000 miles. After bikes sits awhile and is started has a loud rattling type of noise. The noise goes away after about 30 seconds. I am wondering if i have a lifter draining. If it were the cam tensiioners it would;nt quiet down, i dont think. Anyone else has had this problem? THX

Default RE: engine noise

Somebody with an 06 with 30,000 on this forum just had cam bearings quit on him. Check the last couple of days of threads.

lifters can do that. spring gets a little weak and it takes a few seconds to pump up.

Just for Sh*ts and giggles I'd check the oil presure too.

Actually, it could very well be the cam chain tensioners. Remember that the oil pump is gear driven which means that until the bike is running for awhile, no oil is circulating. That means nothing is getting lubed for the first few seconds. If the shoes are gone on the tensioners, you would have metal to metal contact for those few seconds which could produce a lot of noise. After the oil starts flowing and the chain gets a little lube on it, then noise could dissapate to the point where you wouldn't hear it above the engine running.

Just a word of caution.
