My wife and I are taking off on a 2500 mile trip in a couple weeks. I'd like to have an intercom for the trip but I don't want to spend $500 for a complete system. Can anyone recommend a system. Sure would be nice to have a wireless but I don't think there are any around for that price. Please help.
Thanks,
Steve
Trust me! You get exactly what you pay for!! I tried the cheap ones, and all I did was waste my money. Finally, got a J&M intercom (no CB or anything, just the intercom) for my WG. mounts in my saddlebag and works flawlessly. with the headsets, it is a bit spendy, but if you want something that actually works, this is the way to go.

Yes, it is interesting. Although it works through a cell phone so you have to "conference" call you passenger on the cell phone to talk with them. Doesn't sound like it's what I am looking for. Wish there was a wireless intercom which is direct from rider to passenger. http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products...t.asp?Item=SCL
Thanks for the tip anyway.
Since I have two bikes and we occasionally ride 2 up on the XL, I may get this usit. I know that the reviews are weak for these but it may work OK for as much as we will be using it. http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products...asp?Item=CB-50

We use the Chatterbox FRS X2 unit. I do recommend it. The unit works well and I can use my Ipod with it.
I don't like the way that the mic attaches to my helmet. It rides too low and catches on the collar of my jacket when I look to make a lane change.(I have a 3/4 Bell helmet) My wifes helmet is "shorter", and she dosen't mind the mic on hers.
The unit is basically useless above 65mph due to the wind noise. We both wear custom fitting ear plugs with the speaker mounted in the helmet, so maybe it you didn't wear earplugs it would work better at higher speeds.
I use the push to talk because when using the voice activated system, it will tend to cut in and out a lot at all speeds because of the sound from the Reinharts or the wind. I put the PTT on left belt loop and we can each easily reach it.
Sorry for the long reply, but I hope it helps.

It does not work thru a cell phone at least not the "Teamset" version. It will work with a cell phone if you want that option. My wife and I have the Scala Teamsetsystem and talk just fine without a cell phone any where around. It is also nice that I have paired it with my Garmin Zumo and can now listen to GPS directions and also MP3s thru the Scala system. The Conference Call thing is if you have a bluetooth cell phone and answer the phone while riding you can add the passenger to the conversation if you desire.
We have the Scala Rider "Team Set" too. I really like it. It is primarily a rider / passanger intercom (bluetooth), but as was mentioned above, it can be paired with a phone. I also have a Zumo 550 and have my phone and headset paired with the Zumo, so it also allows you to make or accept phone calls if ya want. One cool thing is that caller ID info displays on the Zumo screen and you can answer or ignore the call by touching a button on the Zumo touch screen. All the while, the phone is in a saddlebag...... pretty sweet!
