On the Elite's there is a tube the wire runs through, it has to be vented unobstructed almost straight down and for some reason it does seem to make a difference. They have a very good warranty, perhaps you should get them replaced. I would also agree I was expecting more, however with engine noise, wind and 80mph speeds I'm not sure it can get much better.
FWIW, I have several Harley’s sets, two from Sierra Electronics, and two from J&M of which they have 3 models for the Ultra I believe. There is a distinct difference between them all. There are about 11 of us Ultra riders in my little group, not all, but most of us prefer the J&M in almost every category. Harley being the worst, they do have a good microphone I will certainly agree with that, however J&M has fixed that just recently, pull your mic boot...if it is green you have the best one they offer, if it's black you may want to upgrade. It will not work well (the black one) with a Harley passenger headset, the green one will.
Again though what is good to one can be junk to others.

I recently purchased the JM Corp stuff and they admit in there written setup instructions that its better quality sound to listen to your radio and cassette through the fairing speakers then the JM head sets.
