Can someone here explain th difference between a slip on muffler and I guess ones that aren't slip ons. Do you have to do the whole stage 1 thing with slip ons? What are the advantages/ disadvantages of the slip ons? Can you add the fishtail tips to a slip on?

Slip-ons just replace your existing mufflers, but the original header pipes stay on the bike. Just below the passenger floor boards you can see a clamp where the mufflers connect to the rest of the exhaust system. Just loosen the clamps and remove the mounting bolts under the saddlebags and the mufflers just slip off. You can put different mufflers on with doing the full stage one if you are only after a better sound, but if you want a bit better performance you do need to do change out the intake and add some kind of a fuel management system.

I think adding fishtails to slip ons depends on the mufflers. Are we talking tips or fish tail style mufflers. Some pipes like kerker slip ons allow you to use any harley davidson tips. Some mufflers do not allow you to interchange tips. So if you want fish tails buy a fishtail style muffler or else something that has a changeable tip. I would do the a stage one in the least.

as far as I know nearly ALL slip ons "slip on" to the stock HD pipes.

yes....a lot of us use Rush mufflers, great sound not too expensive

you take the stock mufflers off and put what ever you buy on the stock head pipes unless you want to reduce the heat on your right leg on those touring bike then go with some duals. I have the duals on my bike and it helps alot
