Found out when I got the truck inspected in New Braunfels, TX that next year they were starting emissions testing on vehicles. If you have the stage 1 what has to be done to pass the test? Do you have to put your stock mufflers back with the original air box and remove the PCIII (in my case) or can you lean out your fuel controller and put your original air box on and leave the aftermarket mufflers? I think Dallas County is doing emissions testing. What do you guys do?
Thanks
I only have the dealer inspect my bike.
Current regulation (Harris County) is that motorcycles pass the inspection for lights, brakes, tires only regardless of year.
January 1 2010 new inspections rules will be enforced. Motorcycle built prior to O2 sensors and computers will be exempt other than be in good tune. Motorcycles with O2 sensors must be in operation. PCIII bypasses the O2 sensors. I have a V&H Fuelpak and the O2 sensors are still in operation. A friend tested the tailpipe emissions on my UC with V&H true duals, mufflers, high performance K&N air filter and V&H Fuelpak. It passed the emissions for a stock 07 Harley specs. So unless something changes, I am not concerned!
Just had mine inspected in Houston they only check lights, horn tires and proof of insurance. Cars have been emisson tested since I've lived here (10yrs). I havn't heard anything about bike being tesed but anything is possible. I can't imagine it happening soon, since when does the government do any thing fast.
Well one keep it stock
two, trust your tuner to keep it emissions legal
three, live in a state without any of that.
Although it will become a federal mandate sooner or later.
still researching the EPA emissions direct link, but time for work.
Here is a link to an article about it though. http://www.bikersrights.com/epa/EPA_...sAnalysis.html
This is the reason that HD will be forced to go to liguid cooled before long.
Pretty soon will hit the limits of what can be done with air cooled.
They tested liguid cooled in the 70's and they have been doing it for about 4 years now with the V- rod
The dealer in CA here told me that there are no aftermarket pipes yet for the 08 Ultra classic... something to do with the catalytic sensor.... does this make sense to any pipe guys?
I will ignore some of the ignorant comments about Hollywood and the like and attempt to answer the original question. of what will you do IF it comes to pass. Regarding pipes, I will throw stock pipes back on for the test and take my chances later. Regarding emissions, I have a fuel management system and I can lean the sucker out just as easily as I can richen it up. In the meantime, all the rest is simply fear mongering.
OK, first if you have a stock bike, no worries.
But if you are not stock....
Remember the tuning process also measures emissions. You can tune most of the bikes to meet the standard. You only actually need to have it set there for the 30 minutes for the test.
In Massachusetts it's all about decibels. This is from the DMV Q&A:
My motorcycle was failed for illegal pipes. What's legal?
Generally speaking, you must have a baffle in the exhaust system of a motorcycle. Straight pipes are illegal, and your motorcycle must meet certain noise requirements. For motorcycles manufactured before 1986, 102 decibels is the legal limit, 99 decibels for motorcycles manufactured after 1986.
Well, you live in the only state worse than Calif. Hell, you guys even beat us to legalizing "marriage of alternative lifestyles."
you need to see another dealer, the 2008 Ultra will accept the same pies as a 2007 Bagger, i have vance & Hines big shot true duals on my 2008..................
