Default '06 touring models - potential "gotcha's"?

In spite of my disappointment with my Dyna (several service issues, tranny recall, 15k primary bearing R&R, etc.), I'm close to pulling the trigger on an '06 touring model (and trading in my beemer - but that's a long story). So before I put down a deposit, are there any "issues" with the '06 touring models I should be aware of?

Also, a couple of quick (no doubt, stupid) questions about the tourers:

1. Can the battery be trickled charged through the accessory socket?

2. Can the oil level be checked while on the jiffy stand (note: I HATE calling it a "jiffy" stand - it's a side stand or kick stand fer crying out loud!)

3. How often do you need to check the air pressure in the shocks and what it the average life of the air shocks?

Thanks in advance!

TowJam,

The only things to watch out for is the "lean" running condition from the factory. If you do any mods (exhaust or airflow) you will need to install a SERT (race tuner) or Power Commander (PCIII) to get it to run correctly.

The battery can not be charged through the auxillary plug. You can buy a pigtail that runs out from your battery and plugs into the Battery Tender.

You can check the oil from the "KICKSTAND". The manual explains about checking oil hot or cold

I check my shocks about once a month or if I'm changing the pressure. I run less air when I ride solo so when the wife wants to ride I have to add a little.

I've never known of a pair of airshocks wearing out. Lots of people change them but that is a personal preference.

You will love your new bagger. Let us know what you decide.

I have an 06 FLHTCU. Just sold a 1995 FLHTC with 85,000 miles on it. Never had a problem with the air shocks. I only messed with them when I was carrying a heavier load such as touring and packing heavy. The best way to maintain the battery is with a battery tender. You can connect a pigtail to the battery and have it hid somewhere easy to get to. There is no problem checking the oil while the bike is on the kick stand.

Street glide, have replaced the following....fork lock, front motor mount, security system module, inner fairing (recall), RS tank emblem. Have had radio screen blank out when wet. Extra expense to get it to run right with pipes and air. Satisfied with the performance with a custom dyno tune.

Well, just as an additonal data point.......

Street Glide, have replaced the following since delivery...switched to progressive 440 shocks.
Have had nothing blank out when riding in the rain.
No extra expense to get it to run right since delivery.
Satisfied with the stock engine/pipes/performance.

Oh, I did add XM radio to it.

regards

From spending way too much time on this site, other sites, and snoopin' at the dealer, the '06 touring models seem to be having some problems with motor mounts and fork locks. The motor mounts have been addressed by the MOCO (see my thread from earlier) but the fork lock situation has not. Some folks have mentioned squealing brakes but that is more of an annoyance rather than a serious defect.

Don't know of anything else that would be 'across the board' for the touring line. Buy it, customize it, and enjoy. [8D]

Good Luck!

RCS - what length Progressive 440's does the SG take? Do you remember the model number you put on?

Look, try the bright side, buy a ElectraGlide Standard, cheaper, no problems, and you then can customize until your hearts content

Just my .02 cents.
