HK advanced audio system, help?

HK advanced audio system, help?
Is there a way to vary the intensity of the background on the HK audio system screen? The freaking thing is so red it is distracting at night. I know how to set the contrast but it does not dim the red background. I have searched through the owners manual several times so either I am dopey or it's not in there... or it can't be done.

ouch, not good... gotta find a filter to put over it that cuts out the red light at nite, some kind of gel film or something...
