While putting on the heim joints, as suggested here at HDForums, the rod looked horrible and I didn't want to reuse it. Then while in my tool box I noticed some heat shrink tubing and decided to give it a try. Didn't turn out too bad...
I put them in and here is how it turned out. I used a grommet kit and put one in each corner then they went right in. I also cut the straps off because I didn't need them for length and used a lighter to melt the frayed ends. They fit snug and not sloppy. I am pleased so far. Here is a link of the type of kit I used. I think the one i got was 3/8 but I threw the pack away so I can't be certain. I have about $35 and about 15 minutes in this project.
I mounted my garage door opener inside the fairing on the mounting bracket using Velcro and used a Polished Stainless Steel Momentary button in the fairing, I also mounted my Horn inside the Fairing on the right fairing mount bracket,
