FastHarley....All of my bikes, brand new off the show-room floor had tight front brakes, not just my 2 Harleys, but also my '96 Yamaha Royal Star. 4 of my brothers also ride Harleys, each of them has had multiple bikes, and all of theirs had this issue with front brakes, are you saying that all of these bikes are being set up wrong from the get-go? I am really not trying to make it look like I'm saying you are wrong, I am just wondering why this would be such a wide spread problem.

I had that problem on the front of my Deuce. The bike already had a warped rotor when I bought it, and that made it hard to spin the wheel. So I installed a new set of rotors (stayed with the OEM full floaters $$$) and new pads just for good measure. Even then the wheel still didn't spin as freely as I thought it should. After going through the factory service manual for the torque specs on the rotor bolts, I seen that there is a specified gap between the wheel spacer and fork slider that needs to be adhered to. Once I followed the correct procedure and set the gap right, the front wheel was turning smooth as silk. It was even noticeable when just pushing the bike around......much more easier tomaneuver with leg power.

If you like, fix the problem. Do you know how many bikes are out of alighment from the factory? I am suggesting for you to not take the factorys word, fix it yourself. This is all I have to say on this subject.

Biz44....that's what I've noticed with my 08 Ultra...its really hard just to push it around in the garage. I'm not all that much of a mechanic and everytime I've mentioned something at the shop I get the standard response of "that's how its suppose to be". You would think that dragging as much as it does would even have an effect on gas milage. I've seen this on so many bikes I just assumed the shops response was correct. I've got a service manual ordered, but its not in yet....just not sure if I trust my own wrenching skills fix it, and if I can't get the shop to admit its a problem I'm just stuck with dragging brakes.

Windup08 If you ride to Ft. Lauderdale, stop on in and I'll have a look for you free. Can only be so many things. You are a member so no problem, what we are here for. When here you will learn if you do not already know how to do it. At best there should be only slight touching of brake pads. PS This might be the excuse you are looking for to get out of that snow swept cabin.

FastHarley....thanks for the offer....you never know, I might make it down some day, but probably not soon enough to fix this problem. I've done a fair amount of wrenching and electrical work on my other bikes, not motor builds or anything that involved, but routine maintenance and installation of lights and other stuff. I'm not sure why this bike scares me so much when it comes to opening up my tool box and doing something to it....maybe its because this once cost more than the others, and maybe its because I like this one so much I don't want to risk screwing it up. Anyway, thanks again for the offer.

i have the service manual. in the assembly section in brakes, it refers to checking for drag on the rotors after instal but says nothing about what to do if they do drag. does it have something to do with setting up the right fork when installing the endcap on the fork leg?

Windup08 or ISSI; Get your bike up on a jack, have all the tool available to do the job (go Here to my site for the list), set up a time before hand so I am not riding, in the machine shop (noise), or carousing with cheap women. Call me toll free: 1-866-899-5962 (EST) & have a digital camera along with way to download them & e-Mail them to me or a web cam. I walk you through this problem. More time posting than doing the doing. Your call. Do not be scared!

yes you will have a fair amount of drag.after new pad and rotors are seated maybe less. thats how disc brakes are. if the disc gets blue or brown from the heat you have excessive drag if not dont worry Bob
