Things will change when the consumer gets smarter and asks the right questions up front.
dealers don't want to tell you everything. If they did they might not sell you on that
overpriced service contract and the subsequent service.

Buy a manual, take a class learn to do it yourself and save a lot of money.

And for those that want to know here's a link on synthetic oils

Just to let you know not all dealers are stealers-- our service contract specifies Syn 3 right on the contract, with oil changes every 2500 miles, which is twice as often as the manual specifies for normal usage.

It seems to me that the oil change "every 2500 miles" usually is done up North. I am wondering if it is because of the sludge build up issue. ie short ride -> condensation in the engine-> ice -> sludge.

Am I right in my thinking here?

Changing out synthetic every 2500 miles doesnt make sense to me otherwise. Harley is already being conservative with every 5,000 miles on dino oil.

Service Manual
Torque wrench.

Yup. I did my own too. But for your average Joe it would be:

Oil filter wrench
in-lb torque wrench
ft-lb torque wrench
spoke torque wrench (Spoke tires only)
axle nut wrench (Touring models)
Bike lift
torx set
Stripped bolt read replacements
hex set
ratchet extenders
Air pump
O-rings
AC gasket
C-clip
Primary Gasket
Oil filter
Motor Oil
Primary lube
Transmission fluid
Special purpose grease
Loctite Aerosol Anti-Seize
Loctite Anti-Seize Lubricant
Blue Loctite
Red Loctite
Electrical connector lube
Lubit-8 Tufoil Chain and Cable Lube
Service Manual
Battery meter
(Yea I know some of those items are optional)

So you dontsave moneyon your first service. But you do save hundreds every service thereafter.
