Thanks. Look at my gallery and you can see my set-up. I hope that help. All MP3 device will have this problem if they have a hard drive they will fail. Luckily I got the extended warranty on all of them so I took them back until I found the right one which is the flash memory.

I hear you man, I like doing my own thing too. If you do searches on sites such as price grabber etc., you will see customer reviews for the different kinds of players out there. There is one thing in common with all of the ones with disk drives, they crash. There is a long standing joke with the people at Best Buy Customer Service about the micro drive MP3 players; they all crash.

I have the 20 gig iPod and used it on my bike while it was in my pocket but there is no way I am going to put a big mount for the thing on my bike. I know that eventually the vibrations will crash the drive. Imagine taking your PC hard disk drive and mounting it on a motorcycle; get the picture.

For me the MuVo flash memory micro MP3 player was the solution for the bike and to be frank the gym too. The damm iPod is just too big. I got my 2GB MuVo directly from Creative in their closeout special section for 30 bucks! The Cargo net pouch was 2 bucks on eBay plus 3 bucks for shipping. The tie wrap was about a penny! The friggen tunes are awesome!

I rode from Chatsworth to Laughlin Nevada and never heard the same song twice during the whole one week trip. 2GB is plenty of storage for tunes.

You will have to make your own decision. Like I said before, on my setup, if the Muvo battery dies after 16 hours plus, I just plop in a new AAA battery; the iPod has to be charged. Something I don't want to have to deal with on a road trip.

If the Muvo dies, I can just go buy another one, or send it in; whatever, it only cost 30 bucks! The iPod......well.......

Good luck man, you will do the right thing for you.

I have the 30g hard drive also. I was keeping it in the glove box. It would freeze from time to time. I am getting a memory card one later.

Try an Ipod Nano, they use solid state memory instead of a hard drive.
There has been at least one other thread warning about Ipods with a hard drive and vibration. That thread suggested the Ipod Nano because it is basically a memory card - no hard drive to damage. I bought (based upon the advise from this forum)andhave used an 8GB Nano on my Ultrawithout any problems. It is a regrettable that you had not seen the other warning threads prior to your misadventure. I hope this will help.

Yep, I wish I had looked for/read the threads on this before I bought the cord and spent half a day making a nice bracket to mount my 30 gig.

I have a 30G & 80G iPods that I have used for awhile, but they were prone to lock up. I just picked up a refurb nano off of Apple's website to use with one of Gilbo's mounts.

I've got a 80gig Zune that I used on a trip this summer.

This is the only piece of electronics that I've ever purchased with extended service plan. It paid off as I got 100 miles into my trip, the thing froze. Pulled into Best Buy in Regina (this wasn't the location that I bought it at), no receipt, they found the transaction on their computer. Replaced it with a new one. Done in 5 minutes. Way to go Best Buy.

Charged up and synced the new one that night and the thing worked perfectly for the rest of the trip.

I've got about 9000 songs and 500 podcasts with about 35% free memory.

I kept it in my pocket while riding. Hit shuffle and let it play. Battery lasts for hours. Easily get two days of riding between charges.

The thing might die again some day - whatever. All hard drive based mp3 players have a reputation for being prone to dying. I'll just take it back to the service desk and get another new one if it dies. A service plan is an excellent investment for mp3 players.

I have the nano for my car. If I had a bike w/tunes, I'd prob just keep it in my pocket.
Easy to forget though.

iPods are nice but I would rather use a MP3 disc.I holds over 100 songs per disc and it shouldn't break.
