For this reason I routed the wire back to my tour pak and I plan to run the ipod in there sitting on a soft cushion.

After reading majority of the response I think you get the idea that a Nano is the way to go. I agree, I finished the sound system on my RKC with lower fairings with speakers the system relies on a MP3 player, hence the 4th generation Nano is great. Mine is mounted or I should it is velcro on top of the tank below the main switch. Had some problem adjusting volume so I max out the amp and the Nano and got a in-line volume control you can adjust with your easily even with gloves.

I have had a problem with my 60 gig. When I dropped it in the hard plastic protective case it showed no signs of dammage, but shortly after I started getting the sad file face. I ended up taking it apart and plugging the hard drive back in. It moved just enough to unplug the cable slightly. Plugged it back in twice so far. Works great after repair.
There is a website, ifixit.com, they specialize in apple parts and self repairs. Tools, guides, and parts. Take a look.
