My dealer told me the same thing when I bought my bike... use 2" or smaller baffles with RUSH slip on muffs and no other changes are necessary.
Fast forward a month or two and the heat from the engine and exhaust was really bad. The right side muffler had started to turn color, a light "golden", right about where the pipe connects. It was decided then that a SERT and SE A/C would help the problem. My service manager suggested that wait for their winter specials, 20% off parts if they install and a free dyno.
Total $577 including cables which I may never use, and tax. Decent deal in my opinion.
For what it's worth - Recently purchased an 08 RKC. The dealer installed the Stage 1 filter kit and Rinehart TD's day one. Had me ride through break in period then brough it back for the Dyno with a SERT. I can only assume that the dealer did nothing as far as a download during the break in period. Returned after 500 miles for the dyno tune and honestly didn't notice that much of a difference. Of course I kinda babied it during the break in period so it's hard to say what performance gains I got from the dyno tune over the stock map.
That being said - It's your bike, do what you want to it. It will probably runok and not give you any problems.
Now if you want to get the most of what the motor has to offer, get a high flow filter, pipesand have it dyno tuned with the fuel controller of your choice.

They made you purchase the cable? Yea it's only 29.95 but that's why folks call us stealers,I'd never require a customer to buy the cable.
No, purchasing the cable was my idea. Not that I'll ever use 'em, but I wanted to have them here in case I did, or in case I make a mod and take it to an Indy shop. Plus, I got it for 20% off.
Just called Harley Davidson Customer Service (414) 343-4056. According to them, if you replace the mufflerswith the Screamin Eagle slip-on's you do not have to do anything else.It will not increase the performance, just change the sound. The bike will run the same as it does with the stock mufflers. He also said it will not increase the engine temp and will not effect the flow of the fuel. If you start changing the A/C and the SERT you will be requiredto remap the EFI.
That is exactly the information you would find looking in the 2008 parts catalog, or the Christmas catalog, under Screaming Eagle parts. It does not state you need to remap for just putting on the listedmufflers, but it does say so if you change the air cleaner.
Does anyone have a stock '08 that can look at the mufflers and see if they say catalyst? I don't believe they are. The only catalyst mufflers listed in the parts book or Christmas catalog are strictly for '06, which only had the catalyst in the right muffler. If you build the engine, however, then some stage 2kits come with a catalyst muffler.
When I got my '06, my service rep claimed it didn't have a catalyst muffer. I told him to get down on his knees and read what the muffler said! They are clearly stamped if it's catalyst.
Got a 08 EG Standard. The SE slip on's are toooo quiet.
I bought the Rush slip on's with the 1 3/4 baffle. They was louder than what I wanted. I got the Supertrapp SuperMeg 2in1. Like the sound and extra torque. If I wanted slip on's I would of gotten Supertrapp Slip on's. I'm waiting for Thundermax to come out with a new unit after the 1st of the year for the 08 touring bikes. I've been talkin to them and my Dealer rep for 2 months. HD changed the ECM plug and you have the Drive By Wire on the throttle now they got to update.
Here's a Redneck Video Clip
I gots a 08 Ultra and bought takeoff 08 screamin eagles touring slip ons from the dealer, There is notin either the stock or the SE slip ons a catalyst, althouh the baffles in the them both seem like there there would be one ( couldn't even get a 1/4in copper tube to go thru for an air sensor at the dyno shop)which is a whole nother story,I ran for a week with Vance &Hines dresser duals, S/e Tour slip ons, and S/e hi flow breather with no spit nor sputter. My tuner uses Dyna link software and flashed the ECM, he did a true tune thru every rpm range possible, at both cylinders...the only NOT sweet spot was 100% throttle & 6200 RPM's do't think I'll be out there that much though...now heat issue gone, low gas mileage above 80mph, gone, fly by wire throttle response issue, gone, I think this is the sweetest ride EVER!
