I have a 03 FLTRI. I just added95" jugs, .030 cometics,SE flat tops cast, 203cam with a baseline 105EV100 SERT map. Now when the bike is cold it starts fine. When the bike is hot and Istart itIget a cough, jerk and what sounds to possibly be a starter grinding noise. This grinding noise is worrying me. It usually takes 2 or 3 times to start up.No problems when it's cold only when the bike is warm.
Recheck your map.
You're running higher compression, this can cause a premature ignition of the fuel air.
so recheck that and the timing.
sounds like a fuel problem.
Jerk, clunk, starter grind.....
sounds maybe like the fuel air mixture is igniting too soon. cylinders that are completely warmed up will sometimes tend to do this is warmer climes.
Then the premature F/A ignitiing will actually push a piston down sooner and faster than the starter can keep up with it. Thus giving the bendix (jack shaft assembly) the grinding noise.
I would be checking the starter, gears also... Make sure you haveen't broken or worn any teeth. It's never to late to add compression releases. it would take what maybe 2 hours (thats being generous) to remove your heads. Definetly check the starter and gears tho..... Better safe then sorry!
