I am about 100 miles into the ownership of a new 2006 Ultra. I have riden MC my whole life and this is my first Harley. Unless there is a breakup issue, this bike feels extreemely underpowered. I would like some input if anyone out there can help. Thank you.
If you are use to riding gold wings or some other large japanese motorcycle the ultra will feel that way. You will never make it as powerful as one of the imports unless you are willing to spend 6-8,000.00. A good cheap start is to do a hi flow filter with download and pick up a pair of performance slip ons.
I traded a Kawi 1600 for the Ultra, and the 1600 would run rings around the Ultra. I also own a Wing, which absolutely BURIES the Ultra.
That said, I don't particularly care. What you will find is that the Ultra is the most refined ride available anywhere. Like a fine luxury automobile.
If you purchased the Ultra to tour (i.e. ride all day long at 75) it is an impressive machine. If you purchased it to ride the twisties at high speed with the BMW crowd, you are in for a rude awakening.
And yes, you will see some more power during the break-in period, although not enormous. Mine kicked in around 400 miles - noticable in the low end torque.
P.S. While my Wing runs rings around the Ultra from a HP standpoint, I hardly ever ride it anymore. The Ultra is just so SMOOOOOOOTH.
Do you have any performance parts on it?
If not try the Doherty powerpac aircleaner and a good set of slip-ons with the Power CommanderIII and if thats not enough, add a good set of Cams like the S&S 510G. With this little up grade your bike should run neckin neck with the SE 103" Ultra. Then you could always add the 95" or 97" later along with alittle head work then your Ultra would walk away from the SE 103".
I was not impressed either at first. I now have 2000 miles and am getting used to it. If my PCIII would ever get here maybe I could make it run better at low RPM, when cold and get rid of the pop on decel. In general I love the bike and would not replace it. Had a Honda VT1100 it kicked *** but you got tired after a 100 miles. I have me dream bike now and in general love it. To bad HD has to sell something off the floor that runs rough. I hope I can tweek it and become happier with the low end performance. Runs great at higher RPM. Will cook your man berries when you stop at a light in Florida during the summer.
I have the Screaming Eagle II slip-ons. They are awsome. SE AC also and the factory Map. Don't let them charge you $150 for that download. Add the SERT and have it tuned correctly. I wish I had. Didn't know any better.
Screamin' Eagle Racing Tuner download, K & N filter, and Samson Rolled Thunder pipes make my 2005 quite quick -- though it really feels good at 85 mph all day long. Don't overdue it until you get 1000 miles on it, then keep it under 70 to about 2000 miles. Roll through the gears without redlining, and you'll have a good break-in. I keep up with all other HD's with Stage One upgrades, even when riding two-up. And it looks better than any other 'Wing I ride with.
Also, change to synthetics -- any little bit helps, IMHO.

Pretty much like everyone else has said. I have the SE Stage 1 air filter, SE Pro Perfomance mufflers and a SERT to map it with. It will give the bike a bit more of a boost, I'm kind of spoiled because I went from a 05 EG Classic with the Stage 2 95" kit to the 06 Ultra that I have now. I'm planing on a build sometime next winter or the following to give the old girl some more pep. Going to go 95" with some port work, TW26g cams and have it tuned on the dyno with the SERT I bought.
I've been riding Harley's since 1968 and when I got my 06 EGC It was lacking in what I expected. I broke it in right and did the 1k service plus SE slip ons stage 1 breather and a SERT and dyno all at the same time. When I rode it home that day it was all Harley and then some.
Take your time let it break in and plan your upgrades...
